RetroManCave - Nice YouTube series on fixing a broken A500
Part 1 (dismantle and inspect):
[ Show youtube player ]
Part 2 (investigate and make it work): [ Show youtube player ] Part 3 (clean): [ Show youtube player ] part 4 (... and play): [ Show youtube player ] I really like this series of videos because it is made for people like me: complete electronics noobs. It is explained nice and slow and in layman's terms, the videos show all the tools and techniques used and really zoom in on the problem-locating aspects of fixing up a broken piece of gear; in this case a battle-worn A500 which has already had work done to it over the years. But above all, this video is just glorified Amiga-worshipping with classic tunes playing throughout it. Really good! Last edited by gimbal; 05 October 2017 at 21:24. Reason: edit in part 4 |

I've been watching these too. Well presented, explained in easy terms and very well edited videos.

Very useful second video!
Maybe OT, but what is he using to turn his iPad into an oscilloscope? I really could use that!! Anybody knows? |

That Hantek device in the background is the actual oscilloscope, and the iPad is used as a display device. Certainly takes a lot less desk space than a dedicated scope.

I guess you gotta think if you want it cheaper (older, bulky osc) or smaller (this thing) |

Hey thanks for watching the series chaps, glad you enjoyed it and as you can tell I've had a lot of fun making it and becoming reacquainted with my old friend the A500. I'm still quite new to YouTube film making so will be releasing the series as a single video at some point with a few tweaks to music volume levels and tidying up but no major changes.
I have a few bits on order from AmigaKit so you cam expect a few reviews soon Thanks again |

Edited in the link to the brand-spanking new part 4. @Honx: oh, you posted it as well
@RetroManCave I don't want to wag a finger but... somehow you played the PC version of Turrican 2 on your Amiga |

@gimbal yes I kicked myself over that, it's mentioned in the video description as a correction, late night editing. Hope you enjoyed the rest of it. I've made a single video of the series with that and a few other bits corrected which I'll quietly make available with some interesting segments from Jay Miner between episodes. Anyway thanks for watching.

This series prompted me to dig out the A1200 & 500+ I’ve had in the loft for years, amazingly they both work ! Just need to re-learn everything I’ve forgotten ;/)

Here you go chaps
[ Show youtube player ]
This is the full series with the fixed montage clips, adjusted audio levels as some hard of hearing listeners had a problem with it, and added Jay Miner between episodes. @KFive, glad to hear it, be sure to have a quick check for bad batteries! |

Heya RetroManCave,
Welcome to EAB ...I haven't watched your videos but considering the feedback in this thread, I'm sure they are cool. Also capitalised the thread title to reflect your username. |

not sure if there is a battery in amiga 1200 but there are capacitors that may leak.
amiga 500 plus has a battery, if it didn't already leak it absolutely will start leaking. battery needs to be replaced by modern cell clock (coin cell) battery, like this one. |

The A1200 does not have a battery on the motherboard, but an expansion might. Although by the 90s they were usually coin cells which are not such a leak hazard anyway.

Just to join in with the general recommendations of these videos - they're really well put together, done at a good pace and explained clearly (and some nice touches of humour). Really enjoyed them!
