Any amiga applications that are still useful?

Does anyone still use any Amiga applications (For the old Amigas, A500-A4000), such as word processing, notepad, drawing... etc?

Which ones? And why, do they have any advantages over more recent software for PC/Mac? (all software have good sides and bad sides, so old software could possibly still be useful in some situations.)

And on what platform do you use them?
Amiga hardware, emulation?

I use Wordworth 7 (word processor) and Procalc (spreadsheet) on my real Amiga. I can't say that they have better features than the current Microsoft equivalents, but they have more than enough for 99% of computer users.

A title I can think of that really puts $500 PC software to shame is Disksalv, an awesome program that resolves bad blocks and recovers files from damaged disks.

I don't use that many apps on my Amiga really, but the ones I tend to use most are Directory Opus 4, Personal Paint and Blitz Basic. Also any text editors that happen to be hanging around.

i don't use much of them now, but i'm fond of:

HEX by Nicola Salmoria, an hex editor that could also display, on the fly, (and let you change!) what was in the RAM, like an Action Replay cartridge; it had also a nice search text function.

Edit, the notepad in ClassicWB, that has excellent shortcut functions, way cooler than any silly windows counterpart, tabs for multiple documents, and it's very complete for day to day typing. It was marvelous for text translations, for instance.

Protracker. c'mon, there's not a single tracker program on PC that could stand next to it.

Disksalv, as Alkis says. One program in a similar area that i still use, when checking my old disks is FixDisk, a more elaborate Diskdoctor with a GUI.

oh yeah, Diropus...

It depends what you mean as usefull? I think that DevPak / ASM-one assemblers (when run in WinUAE) are some of the best 68k assemblers / IDE environments.

The only 68k assemblers you can find for the PC are homebrew command line driven ones.

The thread wasn't 'please accuse PC software of being overpriced' BTW. There is plenty of free disk repair stuff for Windows.

I use ANIMATED. It allows me to make cartoons from anims created in deluxe paint. I can freeze frames/add sound effects to frames slow down and speed up the anim. Ive been lookin for 3 years and cannot find ANYTHING like it on the pc. All people have reccomended is flash someting or other. Which is not what i want. ANIMATED is a dedicated anim creator and the pc has nothing that is even close. I do use WINUAE as i can have 8mb of chip and 64mb fast to produce my anims which is better than a real amiga. Then use WINUAE to save the output as an avi file then burn to a dvd. The amiga (even the its under emulation) simple cannot be beaten and these progs are nearl 20 years old!!

music : aegis sonix/protracker
programming :blitz basic/amos
pictures/anim:deluxe paint 4/personal paint/disney animation studio
disk :filemaster2.0/disksalv (hopefully not too often!)
3d stuff:3d construction kit/ligthwave/
text editor:golded
sampling : megalosound (music), vidi (video), quickcam (webcam)
midi sequencer:bars&pipes
video titling:scala mm

all very good stuff!

I have tried Deluxe Paint now, and although it is much less powerful than Photoshop, it was at least really easy to start using, because of the lack of functions. (I didn't use Deluxe Paint much on my old Amiga back in the 90s).

I use FrexxEd2.0 (fantastic programmers editor) and Dice3.16 (ansi C compiler) on my real Amiga. And of course Diro4.

My 'Amiga' is generally used for 'fiddling', but then all my computers are put to much the same 'use'.

With the exception of web-browsing I still use my 'Amiga' ( Amithlon ) for the majority of day-to-day stuff:
Word-processing, e-mail, GFX ( inc using a USB scanner ), MP3's.
( PSP on XP gets a fair bit of use too )

Why?
I find the environment more pleasant to use than any 'modern' alternative.
Though the old Amiga software doesn't compare feature-wise it does the job.
Most 'modern' software drives me crazy by its over-helpfulness & basic features often hidden under the useless extras.

Maybe this makes me some kind of retro-Luddite, though I think of it as simply using the most appropriate tool for the job.

its very peculair.... with imagine....i can have an object to scene to environment within a day..... with lightwave.... i am stll amking the object...

I find lightwave awkward to use... overly complex in the point / poly / mesh manipulations.... I am sure if i spent more time with lightwave then i would get more of a hang with it.... its that i get so frustrated i go back to imagine...

the PC version is a whole world worse.... i even decided to (watch) the developement / training vids..... its like I am missing something...

I still use my Amiga - I use Wordworth 7 and ProCalc. I also use AWeb-II alot to browse the net. It's nice to be able to browse the net with the fear of virus & malware ridden ActiveX crap getting installed on my machine.

The Amiga is a bloody quick machine for Internet browsing. It shouldn't be overlooked.

It is quick, providing the website works with Amiga browsers. From my experience, many websites that I visit don't seem to work well unfortunately.

I'm always trying out applications that I've never used before. Most recently I've been using OctaMED Soundstudio to see if I can finally get into mod making. I also use these on WinUAE a lot:

Workbench (of course)
