CF HD using WinUAE help please

does anyone have a basic SIMPLE walkthrough for a way to access the files on my CF card I use as a hard Drive on my 1200?
I just really want to add a couple of game files I already have to the CF disk, and of course my PC does not recognise the card right now.

I know there is a way to do it using WinUAE, but unless it's spelt out step by stpe in plain English, I'll only mess it up.

thanks all

Stu

Make sure you have the latest Winuae and that your CF card is in the drive/computer.

1.Load your config.
2.Click on 'Hard drives' on the left column.
3.Click 'Add Hard Drive'.
4.Select the card/drive from the drop-down list.
5.Click/enable the little box called 'Read/Write'.
6.Make sure the 'HD Controller' option is on 'UAE'.
7.Click 'Start'.

That should work, if you have any problems, like warning messages, then let us know and someone should be able to help further. I did have a warning message the first time I tried this and had to disable it, but I think the latest winuae doesn't do that anymore.

No, make sure that "HD Controller" option is set to *IDE0* and make sure that both Chipset and ROM are set to A1200. This way you can be sure that the CF card works in the A1200 later or that you get the same problems in WinUAE as you would get on the A1200. This is especially important if the CF card is bigger than 4GB.

Well, the 'UAE' option works fine for me.

UAE is "too good" driver if you want to find all possible compatibility issues.

IDE0 not working: wrong Kickstart (not matching configured model), wrong configuration without IDE emulation. "Chipset Extra" must match Amiga model.

You should always use exact same emulated Amiga model as your real Amiga if you use WinUAE to configure IDE/CF harddrive for real Amiga use. Less surprises when finally booting real Amiga..

Surprises including:

- >4G problem corrupting everything, it is better to notice the corruption as early as possible.
- available memory differences (different drivers = different memory usage. Partially host-side drivers like uaehf.device usually use less memory than "real" devices because they can use Amiga-invisible host-side memory for buffers)
- something I forgot.

Hmmm... I'm using the Amiga Forever ROM's - as detected by WinUAE (Latest version, but issues with older versions too - back so far as wrong ROMs detected), Quickstart A1200 + 64Mb RAM and have checked Chipset Extra!

That's not an answer. Go to ROM page and see which one is actually selected.

If it says 3.1 (A1200) -> set chipset to A1200
If it says 3.1 (A4000) -> set chipset to A4000
If it says 3.X -> select another one, this one does not work.

Old AF version only had A4000 KS 3.1 ROMs. I think 2008 introduced real A1200 ROM.

Enter debugger (shift+f12), type dm to confirm currently used ROM type.

That definately doesn't work for me - it will recognise the CF card only if both are set to IDE0

thanks to everyone for all the info.
and you are all going to think I am a complete idiot, BUT

1, load your config.
what? where? how? please.
I have no idea what this means.

the rest looks like I can figure it out ok.

maybe it'll help if I give some more info.
so, I put my CF card into what my PC is calling the G drive ( just a card reader)
Of course PC does not recognise it.
SO, I go into WinUAE, in paths I clicked the little box and found the folder containing all my KS roms, so it then said all available, so I think that's good !

So, I carried on with the directions given, and trying BOTH IDE0 and UAE give me the same error message of :
"You need to have a floppy disk (image file) in DFO: to use the system rom replacement."

Hmm....

thought I would try again...
so, in quickstart I found something that said DFO, so I thought that might have something to do with my issue.

Did I mention I am new to this??

anyway, I clicked select disk image.
not sure what or where to look.
tried a couple of things within Amiga Programs folder of WinUAE, came up with a weird error message, although did start, so I must be getting somewhere.

So, I think I need to know what or where this disk image is.

thanks again

much appreciated !!

ok, you will want to setup winuae to run like your real amiga, you do have a real amiga right? If so, what type of amiga is it and what upgrades do you have for it.

Do you have kickstarts roms? Do you have workbench adfs?

Lets say you want to emulate a 1200, then the easiest way to do it is select it in the 'quickstart' option.

1.Click 'quickstart' from the left hand column
2.Select 'A1200' from the model drop down menu.
3.For speed and ease of use I suggest you select the '4MB Fast RAM expanded configuration' from the 'configuration' drop down menu.
4.Then on the same 'quickstart' menu select 'set configuration' at the bottom of the window.
5.Now select 'ROM' from the column on the left and make sure a kickstart rom is selected, preferably 3.0 or 3.1
6. If your CF card already has a bootable workbench on it then just load it like I showed you before, if not, then follow step 6a and 6b.
6a. Select 'Floopy Drives' from the left hand column. Select the '..' button to open a file selector and select the workbench ADF, mine is called, "workbench_3.1.adf".
6b. Load your CF card like I showed you before.

For ease of use I suggest you save this configuration so that you don't have to set all these settings every time. Click 'Configurations', click 'Save As...' and save the config file somewhere. Next time, all you will have to do is load that file to setup everything automatically.

Now, once you have setup your configuration and loaded your CF card, click 'Start' and it should all work.

many thanks for all your time in these replies !!

"4.Then on the same 'quickstart' menu select 'set configuration' at the bottom of the window."

I don't have this.
I'm on the QUICKSTART tab, but there isn't anywhere with a SET CONFIGURATION.
I have HOST CONFIGURATION, but can only select DEFAULT.
the bottom of the page only has MODE and a checkbox to start in quickstart mode.

If 'Start in Quickstart mode' is checked, there is no 'Set configuration' button. Once you select 'A1200' in the second step it's already applied, so you can just skip step four.

right, you don't have the latest version winuae. If you can, download it and try again.

EDIT: or do what TCD says

right i still get the same problem,
i can get the hd toolbox to find the cf card, and partition it,
but when i restart the winua the cf card gose back to unknown in the hd toolbox
no matter how many times i partition the cf card it will not keep the config.
i have done this on the real 1200 and it works a treat, why will it not work in winuae, .
