New PA Audio seems to work ok here, but cant say if its better or worse then AL modes, but buffer size seems to need raising for pa modes else audio breaks up if doing any other task. PA modes require Buffer size 4 (else too slow/choppy audio) apart from wsapi which is ok at 3, although 2 seems mostly fine although glitches if doing other things. WSAPI seems to force frequency 96000 which isnt normaly in the list too. My normal usage mode is AL stereo 48000 buffer size 2 and is fine. size 1 can get scratchy.

Testing by playing multitrack mods with delitracker 14 bit noteplayer 48000.
Vista 64, X-Fi ExtremeMusic latest drivers. 8gb ram, Q6600@3600

In my tests I noticed following (A500-mode):

ASIO: not much better
WDM-KS: freezes (either it does not work in Windows 7 or it is buggy, it was commented out in portaudio sources..)
WASAPI: works PERFECT, even buffer 1 works without glitches.

Only WASAPI didn't do that weird slowdown, it looks like portaudio isn't working 100% properly

I've made a few tests (only PA: ASIO) and here are the results:

Using PA:ASIO with my Realtek with ASIO4ALL v2 audio works perfectly with no clicking till sound buffer 2. No slowdown.

Using ASIO with Audigy 2 only with soundbuffer 4 doesn't slowdown. For instance with soundbuffer 2, emulator crawls almost to a stop.

Tested with OctaMED SS 1.03c. Tryed to do some midi + audio testing to measure timing and latency but could not get to WinUAE output any MIDI notes from OctaMED to my MIDI synth. Input was fine.
Don't know if this is a problem with beta, has this is the very first time i'm actually using midi with WinUAE.

Tested games and work exactly the same as in OctaMED.

KS freezed Winuae.

It "appears" that sound is indeed tighter using ASIO compared to DS, but could also be me inducing myself to believe so, has i have no means of comparison until i can get midi working. Till now only made visual note tracker comparison.

portaudio updated. WDMKS freeze bug fixed, previously it only worked if both playback and record was enabled simultaneously. (found hint in november 2007 forum post somewhere on the internet and it still isn't fixed..)

WDM-KS also works perfectly with buffer 1. (I guess it is wrapped to WASAPI under Vista/W7)

Wow, this sounds like amazing progress towards virtually lag-free audio!

I cannot wait to see what happens when I try WinUAE with Portaudio via ASIO4ALL using the SoundMax onboard sound of my new crappy $30 mobo

Excuse me if I sound a little silly but, how can I use portaudio output?
I've updated to 1.6b18, I've put the new portaudio_x86.dll in the plugins directory (and in the winuae dierctory, just in case) and the only output devices I can select are "Realtek HD Audio" and "Primary sound device"...

Thanks!

But I've the plugin dll there! It's the same error Retroplay was having, but I can't get it working...any ideas? Thanks!

I am on XP sp3 pro, too...

Perhaps installing:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

fixes the problem.

(there may be easier solutions but I am not really interested currently..)

yes, it's working now.

report:

-I can't see the audio output I am selecting: it appears as PA: and some strange characters.

-I've to increase sound buffer inside winuae to get the same speed as with Direct Sound. If I don't emulation and sound suffers serious slowdown. Is this normal? It's supposed to eliminate sound latency, but if I've to increse sound buffer, then I don't see much sense in using PA modes.
Is it supposed to produce less latency with PA mode and sound buffer=2 than DirectSound mode and sound buffer=1??

I am on xp sp3.

Thanks!

There is unicode issue in last few betas.. (next beta will be released tomorrow)

Beta 14 works ok.

In my tests (as can be seen above), only WDM-KS (and WASAPI but it is Vista+ only) worked nicely. I also remember seeing that not all drivers implement WDM-KS.

Try also ASIO4ALL and ASIO.

Portaudio sound quality seems to be very sound driver/Windows version specific..

As an octaMED user I feel like to suggest to you friend to export audio from octamed (soundstudio does that) )or via winuae save audio function and MIDI score separately (med saves midi data as .MID file). After it would be a joke to syncronize audio and midi data using something like cubase on a pc...

BTW, I use amiga and midi and never ever found any lag problems.

Hope this helps!
