Motorola 68060

Greetings!

Does anyone know what percentage of cost has to be paid as import tax if importing a CPU from the USA to the UK?

Thanks

2% import duty + VAT at 20% + arbitrary handling fee from whatever carrier is handling it.

Also worth noting that import duty is calculated using the cost of the item plus postage costs, and that VAT is then calculated using the cost of the item, plus postage, plus import duty. So you pay VAT on import duty. I found all this out the hard way!

FYI if there are any price stickers on the thing you buy they have been known to use those and not the value on the invoice or on the export documentation.

As I found out when I imported a dozen 20+ yo games all with their original price stickers on. Bought for $1 each, they all had $29.99 on their stickers.

I had to leave them and walk away having seen the fee Royal Mail wanted to charge for me to collect.

That's shocking. But worthwhile to remember.
I suppose most of us wouldn't think to ask the vendor to 'sanitize' the boxes of prices.

I imported £2k worth of car parts a long while back, it was horrific what they charged for that lot, if Royal Mail get involved they slap a handling charge in top.

Think UPS is your best bet for a carrier as they will handle it at both ends.

The package will have customs value declared/ written on front normally so you could be a bit "creative" with the value..

You can also ask the Shipper to send as a Sample....

Not all will, but some do!
