Second Samurai (AGA) crashes WInUAE
I wanted to test the floppy version of Second Samurai (AGA) and it crashed WinUAE.
I am using this version I found in TOSEC: Second Samurai (1994)(Psygnosis)(AGA)(Disk 1 of 3)[cr HLM] After the cracktro, WInUAE crashes. Minidump attached. |

JIT enabled = crash dump is useless (and probably it is caused by JIT anyway).

Hmm that is weird. I had disabled JIT because I knew it couldn't be trusted. Let me try again.
Yup now WinUAE doesn't crash, I just get a 8000 0003 Task 0000002C Guru. Enabling Cycle Exact made it work. Thanks Toni! |

Thanks for the heads up Akira; I didn't even know there was an [AGA] version
When I add games to my collection I usually add the OCS / ECS version and the AGA version (if available). Anyway I just tried all TOSEC disks and the .IPFs. After inserting disk 2 there is messed up sound, the game loads to track 20 and goes no further... Anyone know how to fix? |

The IPF works fine with an A1200 quickstart (compatibility slider most left).

So I usually use the "Quickstart A1200 - 4MB Fast RAM expanded configuration" for all my AGA games. Using this though; Second Samurai [AGA] gives you the issues I mentioned above... As you've mentioned though; if you use an "Quickstart A1200 - Basic non-expanded configuration" (with Cycle-Exact ticked or Compatibility slider to far left) then the game works fine. Guess the game doesn't like Fast RAM... Last edited by DamienD; 23 January 2016 at 19:46. |

btw: you don't have to tick "cycle exact" manually. Set the tick for Mode -> Start in Quickstart mode+the compatibility slider most left before you start the emulation.
edit: Ah, OK. You figured it out yourself. |

As I said i tried a TOSEC version (mentioned it above) and it worked fine as long as cycle exact was on. It's not Fast RAM, I had disabled Fast RAM in my config and it would still crash after the cracktro.

All versions didn't work for me if I have 4MB Chip RAM set. I always have "Cycle Exact" on in my OCS / ECS + AGA configs (unless it causes an issue which rarely happens) So to summarise; your issue was not having "Cycle Exact" ticked, my issue was having "4MB Fast RAM" enabled. Akira, TOSEC files are tricky at best. Whilst most of them work, a lot of them don't, even on emulators, and thus have the alternate [a] versions to fall back on. Also, some cracking groups are more competent than others and of course, the badly-coded cracktros from those incompetent groups crash. Then you have the games filled with trainers [t], and hacks [h] in general. And most bafflingly of all, there are the broken [b] files - why keep them? For the curiosity of programmers?
Anyway, the filenames contain all the information you need to know about the content of the files, and here is a comprehensive guide to all the jargon I've given some examples to above: http://www.tosecdev.org/tosec-naming-convention |
