Blizzard mkIII battery question

Hi all

Just a quick question:

On my Blizzard MKIII, the battery has gone, but I can't seem to remove it easily and I don't want to break anything, are they soldered on?

Once removed, does it matter if I run it without? Don't want to run the risk of a leaky battery

cheers for replies

i dont have such card, but looking on some pictures ( http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/search....0+III&company= )
i'd say, it has two soldering points on the backside. (picture taken from amiga.resource.cx )
IIRC boards can run without battery, just not storing time/date anymore.

Yeah, remove it.

Just be careful when de-soldering it, as the board is very "busy" around one of the battery legs!

@ AliasXZ

Just try to find an old PC board with a simple Button Cell 2032 battery socket, unsolder it from the board and solder it on the back of your MKIII.
Just be careful to double-check the polarities.

This is something I was wondering about but I never asked:
since the original battery is NiCd, then a current is flowing from the board *to* the battery (in order to recharge it). If we (on A501 too) put on a Lythium battery (not rechargeable) instead of a NiCd or NiMh, will the current not damage the battery sooner or later? Or (not probable but possibly) damage the board?

here is my old photos replaced base-battery of PC m/b.
you can use also a small zener diode for stopping to recharge the lithium battery, connected as from (+) to the Blizz way.

Great idea!
Any zener diode will do?

Any diode will do, just ensure the anode is on the battery +, and the cathode (banded side) is on the pcb side.

I didn't think that Blizzards charged the battery?

Well, all boards which have NiCd batteries do charge them

Well, I thought it was just a CR2032 that I removed from my 1230 MkIV

Then perhaps I'm wrong .
However, in these cases why did they solder a non-rechargeable battery to the board? This sounds stupid, since a Lythium battery has a limited life (long, but limited. 3..5 years).
PCs did use CR-like batteries, but with sockets and not soldered to the mainboard...
