Simple 4/8MB RAM board mod

Hi,

I just wanted to let people know about an incredibly simple but incredibly useful mod I did to my Amiga 1200 yesterday!

Of course just about everybody knows the problem with 8mb RAM boards for the A1200; that the PCMCIA slot is disabled when using the full 8mb and that a jumper must be set to '4mb mode' in order to use a network adapter or CF reader. Well I got fed up of having to open the case and switch the jumper everytime I wanted to transfer files from my PC so I decided to rig a switch to the outside of the case allowing me to do this.

My RAM board is an Elbox 1208 which uses three header pins for the jumper settings: the top pin for 4mb and the bottom pin for 8mb with a common pin in the middle. So what I did was cannabalise a 3 pin PC motherboard header plug and wire it to a SPDT switch with the centre pin wired to the common pole and the other pins to the other poles. I then attached the switch to the outside of the case just under the floppy drive.

Took about 2 hours to do and that is with my ropey soldering skills as well!

Very basic but makes life alot easier!

Please let me know what you think, will post some pictures soon.

That's a handy little tip there TreacleWench, I only have a 4MB stick in my upto 8MB card but I would definitely use that idea if I ever upgraded to the full 8MB

Good mod mate. That is definitely a useful hack in order to be able to use the PCMCIA whenever you want or the whole memory on the other hand

Cheers and gief some pics

Should be easy to cannibalise the tiny electronic circuit from Kickstart switchers which enables you to switch kickstart with nothing but a long reset or holding down left mouse during reset.

That way you need no switch on the case.
