Happy Skweek discussions with Laurent Arditi (was: IPad/Iphone owners, HOL needs you)

First, you can't hide, I have noted the names of all those volunteered for the Amiga emulator:
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=65983

Anyway, there is apparently a version of Skweek for the Iphone/Ipad. Here is a video (please lower the sound volume because after a while the guy shouts):
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xs1...pad_videogames

From the video, it seems really similar to the original, so I believe it can count as a conversion.

So can one of you try it and confirm that. While you are at it, can you take a screenshot from the title screen and one in-game, so that we can make a DBS for the conversion screenshot section.

The game is free apparently. Here is a link to the itunes link (click on the game "cover"):
http://www.freshuu.com/games.html

Thank you in advance

PS: Don't try to visit the other pages of the above site, there is nothing that makes sense, just some mix of techical and corporate babblings. Well, you can visit to laugh a bit, but don't waste too much time to try to understand what is written or you will get a headhache

Thanks anyway. Can you post what your device is and/or the requirements are (supposing it is said on iTunes), so that other potential helpers don't waste their times?

Now I am not sure it is my device. I tried to search this game on the App store and it didn't show up. I think it's a country restriction (so it might not be available at the US app store).
So maybe it's only distributed in Europe? Or was taken down from the shop. How old is this game?

[edit] Yeah, checked again and that game is nowhere in the App store. Either it was taken down or this is a regional block, but I never heard of regional blocks for games.

No idea, I did not find any useful information on the website, be it a release date or any regional restriction.
The video is from this year's July it seems.

Well, if someone in Europe can check, that could prove useful.

Well, that's weird.

But thank you for trying.

So the only proof currently available is the video.... I won't hurry to had it as a conversion then.

This maybe did not get the "green light" from Apple to be released, I suppose. Their other game is not on the store either. Perhpas the whole studio went bust.

You might be right on both points.
Thanks for checking that their other game is not there too.

I guess I will have to try and contact one of the original developers (I think one had a dedicated personal page).

Quick search: Apparently the Ipad/Iphone conversion was released in July 2th in the USA:
http://www.gamespot.com/skweek-2012/forum/
and 3rd in France:
http://www.jeuxvideo.com/jeux/iphone...750-skweek.htm

Finally, it seems like the game was originally released on ST:
http://www.mcvuk.com/press-releases/...nd-ipad/094755

So I might change the original status in HOL. I guess I will ask the author to confirm if I have to contact him.

That would indeed be short lived.

I sent a mail to Laurent Arditi (coder) because there are really too much speculations.

Happy

I have received an answer from Laurent Arditi.

First, he took a quick look at HOL and found it quite exhaustive, so he sends his congratulations. And therefore I extend those to the core team, super-contributors and all contributors.

Regarding Skweek on iOS, it does exist and was indeed published in July 2012.
The licence was sold to Freshuu but apparently Freshuu renounced to market the game (it seems they are going out of business).
As a consequence the original authors and those who ported the game to iOS asked Apple to take the game out of the AppStore.

They are currently looking for a new publisher and pondering on publishing it themselves.
I pointed Laurent Arditi towards the Qwak and Battle Squadron as iOS ports which managed to be published successfully.

He offered to send a version of the game to whoever is interested. So I guess that means that whoever is interested will send me their email address via PM so I can forward them.
However, if you could wait one day or two before doing.
I am trying to lure him on the forums If that happens it might be more simple to PM him directly.

Finally he confirmed that the original Skweek was the ST Skweek.

Well I'd be interested in the game I have a jailbroken 3GS where I could install whatever.
Nice story! So I was partially right, someone went bust!

Hi all,

Here I am!

lilalurl is right... there have been some "issues" with Freshuu so the game is not on the AppStore anymore. I discussed with the iOS coder and he said that we may temporary allow people to get the game using TestFlight. We are trying to get ownership of the Skweek account on AppStore to them reenable official downloads.

Any questions, thoughts, any thing about Skweek, you are welcome!

Welcome! I hope you sort this out real soon!
Can I get in on a testflight download, then?

Welcome

I have a question:

Were you asked for advice when the different covers for the game boxes were made? Or did the publishers decide only by themselves?

When I compare Skweek on the title screen (and in-game) - cute, friendly and smiling- with Skweek on the front of the boxes I have some trouble thinking it is the same entity.

Skweek seems a bit lunatic on the both box fronts:
http://hol.abime.net/1965/boxscan

And on Super Skweek box front:
http://hol.abime.net/2208/boxscan
well, frankly, I see a psychopath creature

I must admit that Freshuu's cover, while not fantastic, translates more accurately the "cuteness" of the game.

Yes we did have our word (well, not for the US-Gold nor the Japanese boxes). It is always difficult to match the spirit of a game character with a "real" drawing.

I remember some iterations for Skweek; and not being very happy with the SuperSkweek box

It's fantastic to have you here and read your insight into the creation of these games.
Was there any game you never released on Amiga that might be hiding in some cupboard?

Thanks!
Yes, after SuperSkweek we started working on a completely different project: a table tennis game. It was super realistic - unusual for at that time -, but yet keeping a good gameplay, such as Konami's game.
But Loriciel, our publisher, went out of business and we gave up the game industry.
