dead cbm monitor(s)
My main CBM monitor died a few days ago. Only one which I can use now shows evident signs of its old age.
I doubt they can be fixed... So, question is : where can I find a suitable monitor for my A1200, or an adapter to use those cheap PC monitors ? I want a PAL compatible display which shows acceptable quality. Perhaps an old TV is ok, but is there anything else usable nowadays ? Found something which looks like what I need (Indivision AGA 1200) on Amigakit, but it does not look easy to install for me (I don't want to open my A1200 because I'm not sure it'll still work after I close it again ; I'd certainly prefer an external adapter), and there appears to be no stocks of it left. What should I do now, before my last dying 1083S goes forever ? (it already makes bad noise and flashes, but still displays something) |

Get a TFT TV and a scart cable.. That's probably the easiest combination.
Some of them also take the Amiga's picture in via the VGA port with just a simple d23->hd15 adapter.. These are the minority, however. |

Which model was it?
In the UK there are Television Repair people who will repair Amiga compatible monitors such as 1084s as they are practically identical internally to Philips 14" portable CRT televisions. Their industry has taken a beating recently as TV's have become a disposable commodity. Usually they no longer have shops but operate from home and can be found locally using the business telephone directory (Yellow Pages). Prices are reasonable and if they can diagnose & fix it also ask for a CAPS replacement at the same time your monitor will come back with a new lease of life. Ebay. But they are probably no better condition than yours was before it broke. Quote:

Buy an old one from eBay. Buy a new LCDTV from a local shop / supermarket. |

I got a JVC 17" LCD TV (non HD) off ebay. Really please with it, great picture from my A1200 via RGB Scart. Paid £20 for it, bargain.

Just do not get a wide-screen one. Make sure it is 4:3

My Philips CM8833-II also died recently and i'm on the lookout for another Amiga compatible monitor (for my A500/A600)... or i could do what fitzsteve has done and buy a nice small (non-widescreen) TV with an RGB cable... but i will miss the screen adjust controls

Thanks for your answers.
Just to be more precise, I have 3 monitors, of which 2 are dead and one is dying : - Atari SC1435 I used on the ST before I had my A1200 (works on it too) - shows no reaction at all, not even power led (I believe it's internal PSU) - CBM 1083S-D1 - the dying one (it has Orion tube inside, not Philips as I supposed) - CBM 1083S-P1 is the one which just gone out - shown psychedelic colors at the center as agony, and now shows nothing at all - that one came from Ebay, died 3 years after I got it. Internally it is different from my other 1083S ! Problem is that I need not only the screen, but also stereo sound. Cbm monitors sound better than cheap PC loudspeakers IMO. Also I live in France, not UK. I believe TV repairmen would just tell me to buy some new one. I could get a TV but I think I'll lose some quality. And I have Peritel cable, not Scart. |

If the problem is just the PSU it is easy to fix.
Most 1083/1084 just burn out the flyback transformer. I bet the 1083S-D1 just have this problem. If you want to fix those, remember to take the opportunity and replace the electrolytic capacitors. Inexpensive and will give you some more years on the CRT's. |

Depends for whom !

I don't know what to do with the flyback transformer, nor do I even know what it is exactly. I'm not sure I can do more than changing a fuse... I've got no soldering abilities to do that... |

Amiga Centre (near Paris) can fix the monitor, but will cost you...
BTW: I visited your town: beautiful and with nice people. Paris inhabitants have enough from tourists, I'm afraid. |

Are you sure it was my town ? You should've told me, we would have met then (or perhaps it was long ago ?) I admit I don't like Paris much... |

I still think you could get a 1083s monitor repaired locally using a TV repair guy from your local business telephone directory. |

I agree with Alex. These aren't rocket science, and the TV repair guys probably saw many of these in the 90s, they might still remember exactly where to look.

My local TV repair guy fixed the monitors in my Coin-ops
Edit: Although they probably need doing again after two years in a damp conservatory. Last edited by alexh; 21 December 2009 at 15:15. |

I tried 3 different TV repairmen and none could do a thing
Most of them don't even know that something existed before their PC, when they know something about computers at all. One said spare parts can no longer be found, or are too costly. The one who knew the most said he no longer repaired this kind of stuff... Now I think I'll get an old TV @alexh : you've got a real treasure in your area, for sure. |
