SCSI controllers and Drive Size

I am currently thinking of picking up an amiga 500 and wisk to know if all the SCSI controllers that plug into the expansion slot accept larger drives or are they restricted to small MByte range.

Not all of them will support large drives..

Go for GVP, Commodore or Supra..

If they don't support the larger drive, can you just format the larger drive to the size that the contoller will handle? ie. The buddah ide controller can only handle up to 120 gig drives, but you can use 160 gig drive just as long as you do not use up more than the first 120 gig.

Unfortunately it isn't so simple.

Some freeze/crash, some work.. Some require latest boot ROM version.

As Toni said, those SCSI controllers are some way picky in what sizes they accept.

As a rule of thumb the older the controller is, more limited it is about what sizes it accepts.

Sizes goes from <512Mb (SCSI (6)), 8Gib (SCSI(10)) or more. So test the controller with a over-512Mb disk, if it works, the controller will run happily with disk up to 8Gb (not bad at all!). If the chosen file system will cope with the HD size is another matter...
