I've understood that you can't directly transfer an HDF image to HD partition but can you copy the contents of an HDF to Amiga formatted HD partition within WINUAE, even the system partition?

You can. The difficulty is that you have to define a partition which has *exactly* the same size as the HDF, otherwise it will not work.

Yes, certainly. Use the "add harddrive" button to define the harddrive to WinUAE, then just copy all files from your HDF to the HDD.

I take that it is safer to perform the copy via shell instead of dragging and dropping?

I'd use DirOpus or similar, but shell copy is ok, too.

copy hdf:#? hdd: all clone

Replace hdf and hdd by the respective partition names.
