My all time favourite game - thanks alexh.

Oolite, oh yes! A must-have if you are any kind of Elite fan.

I've recently started playing this again.

Got to Elite status on the BBC, now going to do it on the Amiga

LOL.

Elite really is a great game. Spent hours and hours and hours playing that as a kid. Should really have another look at it but I've got a feeling that it might take away all my time if I do.

Does anyone remember a (I think...) C64 magazine that had a really good "how to flawlessly dock" guide? I can't remember where it was from but it was step by step instructions for docking that I used to use. Would be nice to read that again wherever it is...

@AlexH Did you have the tape version? I dont think there were any missions on the tape version, could be wrong though...

I remember playing Elite (the tape version), made it all the way to Dangerous, before my tape deck chewed up my save tape. Bah. Later on, bought ArcElite when it came out (still the best IMHO) and made it to Deadly. But never Elite. Never made it to Elite ;-(

Elite has got to be one of the best games of all time. Loved it and still do . Shame they dont do a remake. Wasnt David Braben supposed to be working on Elite 4?

I believe what he has in mind will cost a fortune to set up, the servers alone will cost a fortune. He wants to implement something along the lines of Eve Online but on a grander scale. Including real trading and in-game advertising. A possible £1,000,000 a week earner if done tastefully.

However a recent interview had him talking down the MOSTG aspects and talking about 1-player experiences.

The longer he leaves it though, just like the Amiga name, the fewer people will remember Elite and the less money the Franchise will be worth.

I remember getting to Elite on the Amstrad CPC version. Took ages! I had a lot more spare time then.

From memory, to progress faster we used to enter witch-space, destroy the 4 thargoids there, scoop up the tharglets(?), sell them, rinse & repeat.

There was also a cheat that enable you to expand the cargo bay beyond it's normal capacity. I can't quite remember how to do that but I'm pretty sure it was something to do with the tharglet collecting. Very useful.

I think the missions on that version were; destroy the cloaked Asp (which got you the cloaking device), rescue the refugees from the star going nova, and destroy the thargoid base.

Oh yeah, and mining lasers ruled - 4 shots for a thargoid!!

Was very cool, Right on Commander!

Don't forget Elite: The New Kind, an exact copy of BBC Elite reverse engineered from the original 6502 code ported to modern machines.
