Cody Jarrett's Splendid Top 20 Shareware/Freeware/PD Amiga Games

Here's the shareware equivalent to my commercial Top 20!

Number 20 - Parachute Joust

It's simple, it's obviously written in AMOS and it's fatally flawed - but it's short-term fun for two players.

Two men jump out of a plane with one parachute and have to battle for it before they hit the ground. There's an amusing animation at the end of the drop and some clouds, but that's it!

It's flawed because it's possible to fly off the screen and get lost, but if each player stays in view, then it's great fun.

Mmmm - I wonder why it mentions CRL on the titlescreen. They were a commercial publisher...

Number 19 - The Shepherd

Just to show that you can find all sorts of things in the Amiga shareware scene, here's a Populous/Powermonger clone.

It's a game about being a shepherd and herding sheep - the graphics and atmosphere is great and there are some neat weather effects too. Lots of effort and time has been spent on this one to produce a professional-looking game.

Not quite in the same league as the Peter Molyneux games, but worth having for what it is.

I remember seeing this game, It came free with a magazine, but I can't remember if it was a demo or not.

Since my Amiga died, everything has been put in the loft, so can't get to it at the moment.

I remember trying the shareware. Just as with populus I never had that much of an idea of what to do.

I'll upload all of these games eventually...

Number 18 - Gun Fighter

Not a game you can play on your own, Gun Fighter is very simple. Two players control two gunfighters. You are both prompted to draw and each must press your key (Space and Return). The first to draw wins. Anyone drawing prematurely loses.

Try it when drunk, but don't destroy your keyboard.

Number 17 - Mister And Missis

Mister And Missis features two characters who must work together to navigate through the game. You can swap between the two during play.

It doesn't boast great graphics or sound and comes across as a little amateur, but it's a fun game in the spirit of 8-bit games such as Head Over Heels.

Looks like a fun game though. Will it be in the zone or should we just scavange the net for it ourselves?

Yep I love Mr and Mrs! A great game, quite hard though!

In that coverdisk it came with a really interesting Space Invaders clone...

Number 16 - Tanks 'n' Stuff

If you ever play Capture The Flag online in games such as Team Fortress Classic and Unreal Tournament, then you'll recognise this concept - but in a shareware Amiga game.

The screen is split four ways and each tank has to collect flags which are spread across the landscape and bring them back to your base. Of course, leaving your base to find more flags leaves it undefended.

This is yet more multiplayer fun from the Amiga shareware scene.

I remember having this game, but never really played it much.

I remember a old pong tennis game as well, was it a hidden part or a separate game on the disk? Can't remember.

YEAH! Tanx 'n' stuff, how I LOVE this game, it ranks together with worms as the best multiplayer game ever.

Paul:
That pong game was a hidden game in Tanx 'n' Stuff, you had to pause and press a certain key in the keyboard

CodyJarret:

Don't you happen to have a registered version of Tanx 'n' stuff, do you? I've been looking for the registered version for ages, tried to contact the author with no sucess... that was the first shareware game ever I thought it would be a good idea to register.

Hmmm, is Worm Wars going to be in the top 20? It's damn good if I do say so myself :-)
