KS 1.2 - any problems with games?

Hi all,

complete n00b question, even though I had an Amiga for years it's been a long time between drinks.

I've got an A500 with Kickstart 1.2 in ROM - there shouldn't be any compatibility issues with the majority of games should there? Because wouldn't the majority of games NOT use any KS/OS calls?

The only possible problem would be if a game needed KS 1.3 and was workbench friendly and used KS/OS 1.3 routines wouldn't it?

Thanks for helping a thickie.

If the game is Workbench-friendly then it will have no problem, no matter which Kickstart version. Only games with illegal direct jumps into Kickstart code will break with another Kickstart version.

Roughly, I'd say most games made before 1991 should be no problem.

If it runs with Kickstart 1.3, then it almost certainly will run with 1.2. The differences between 1.2 and 1.3 were rather minor.

compatibility problems tend to go in the other direction - some games that work with ks 1.2 don't work with 1.3.

True, however when you happen to find a site such as BTTR that provides any compatibility info, most games that work on 1.3 say 1.3, even though they would work equally well under 1.2. It would be useful to know the minimum Kickstart version required for each game, but that information isn't usually provided.

I remember that Midnight Resistance refused to work on KS 1.2 , while it worked fine on 1.3

I used a 1/2 meg chip and 1/2 meg fake fast A500 ks1.2 for years and can't remember finding any games that wouldn't work and required KS1.3. In fact I'd say that KS1.2 is better (for games anyway) as it will run some of the really early games like Archon
Midnight resistance worked fine on my KS1.2 machine (it was a crack though).

The drawback with most PAL KS1.2 machines was they used the OCS (Original Chip Set) which didn't allow the NTSC mode switch so that you can play games like the Lotus series at full screen at 60hz on a PAL system.

I think the KS1.3 enhancements were maily to do with hard drives (booting). KS2.0 is when they did the real changes and showed which software was badly written.

but most of the better games from 1991 on, needed a 1MB expansion card,
if you have none, go and buy one via "ebay" f.e. , they cost about 40 euros
in early nineties, today you can get them for less than 3 euros, and it really pays..
indiana jones and the fate of atlantis
Monkey island 2
history line
the settlers etcetc.
they all need 1mb

Sometimes disabling things like external drives can help too (as each connected drive takes up some memory and some early games use very close to the full available amount of RAM)
