Amigas MIA

I've not been keeping an eye on Amiga auctions and sales for some time. There's practically none in the US and Canada. I found two A1200s on eBay today between the two. Most are overseas and prices are seem high even for stock systems. This has been the new norm now? Or something that has recently occurred?

Sadly this is the norm here. In the last few years prices have soared. I feel it's largely due to people who are marketing these as collectables rather than something to use. Sadly world is run on people hoarding and then selling on for huge profits.

I bought a A1200 this year and followed the prices in Germany. You can expect to pay around 250 Euros / 275$ for a stock A1200 in good condition. The immediate prices on ebay are way overblown.

The A300o is my favorite Amiga. I bought 3 of them years ago hoping to restore and upgrade them and they fared no better than my A1200s. Sitting in my closet.

You have 3 A3ks and A1200s in the closet and are wondering that prices go up?

It pains me to think that due to nagging (from the wife ) I sold off a boxed A1200 stock with CF card for about £90 a few years back

Nobody is blaming the closet, guys stop blaming the closet. It's just that some people might be a little concerned that your Amigas (just the A3000s) might be suffering some neglect. I think if you were to sell me say two of those A3000s at the for-public-service-price I can give at least one of them a more fulfilling home. And that way we won't have to report you to Amiga Protective Services. I just hope the Ministry of Amigas doesn't hear about this.

They’re not complaining. They have AC in the summer and heat in the winter. It’s cozy in there.

Retro computing in general is rapidly increasing in popularity, and there are more collectors than ever before, all looking to add to their count ofmachines. It's pretty simple supply and demand - the supply is finite and diminishing, and the demand is increasing. Of course prices are going up, and if people are willing to pay the prices then that's what they're worth. There are still bargains to be had, but the days of Amigas (and other retro machines) being gotten rid of for peanuts everywhere are long gone. You need to go back at least a decade for that - prices have been consistently rising since then.

The worry now is. Given that I could get rid of an Amiga. If I needed spares, the cost of them in years to come may be as much as the Amigas are worth now! It's like keeping another of the same Amiga just for spares.

Well, I think the expectation would be, that prices will drop drastically in ten years or so, when people start selling their collection because of old age. (Moving into senior citizen housing etc..)

Indeed, when these collectors die or otherwise can't look after their collections, they'll suddenly become available again. Mind you, depending on who is looking after them then, they could easily just end up in recycling / landfill as obsolete electronics and not find their way back onto the market...
