convert chip from sm to plcc?

Hello, I am thinking of removing an surface mounth chip to clean well the motherboard and make sure there is no corrosion going on under this.

I was wondering however, can I install a plcc socket instead and convert the sm chip to be compatible with the plcc socket? Or it does not work like that and I would need to buy a plcc version of the chip?

If the surface mount chip is PLCC to begin with, yes, you can install a corresponding socket (assuming there is enough space - sockets are obviously larger than the chip itself). Which chip do you have in mind?

This is sometimes done with e.g. A600/A1200 CIA chips so that they are easier to swap out should they fail. Often also programmable PLCC chips (GAL/EEPROM/etc.) are put in sockets.

Of course, if the surface mount chip is of another type than PLCC, then it will get pretty tricky.

At the moment I have in mind paula as this is the one which has signs of underneath corrosion. However I was wondering if I could the same with all surface mounts of an A1200...

You could, but do keep in mind sockets have their own issues. Sometimes the chips don't make good contact, or the pins become oxidized, and then you get hard to diagnose problems. This is especially true with desoldered chips, as they can still have residual solder blobs on the legs unless you do a very tidy job.
