Classic WB OS 3.9... System.Zip

Hi

Trying to get OS 3.9 version of Classic WB installed on my A1200. I've got the files from Bloodwych and I've written the Disk image back to a floppy.

Now for the System.zip bit.... urgh.

I can't get my Microdrive HD with my OS 3.9 install on it to be recognised by my PC... Doesn't show up in my card reader using "Add Hard Drive"... it doesn't show in the list of connected drives.... but works absolutely fine and dandy on the Amiga.

Kind of lost as to how I get a System.zip ... can I do it on the amiga, if so how as Dopus isn't on a standard BB1+2 OS 3.9 install (or if it is dafty here hasn't found it) ?

Cheers

Andrew

Without checking... there's unzip software on aminet. You could also run winuae and use it to talk to the microdrve. PC disk formats and Amiga ones are different, that's why you can't read it on a PC. Winuae knows how (with a couple of tweaks!)

Just a thought : Does it show up inside the emulation when you enable the 'Include removable drives...' checkbox?

If you are running Windows VISTA, you need to run WinUAE as Aministrator for this function to work, (right click)

I will check this later.

Am already running as admin (if I didn't the "Add Hard Drive" button would be greyed out)

Same thing, and thats with 'Automount removable drives...' and 'Add PC drives at startup'...

Double Clicking on the drive Icon in windows gives me a "J:\ is not Accessible. Incorect function." error. J:\ being my CF slot. The CF reader works with the card I use to swap stuff to my Amiga so the reader seems fine.

Maybe it just don't like my Microdrive

hmm

looks like I'll be creating the system.zip on the Amiga then. Funnily enough, amongst the Amiga disks I got as part of the "Bundle" I accquired yesterday (Spares ftw!) there would appear to be a rather handy looking disk with "Directory Opus" written on it

I wonder if it works....

Why would you want to create a zip file at all ? The zip archive is only used to transfer the big batch of files to the Amiga in one step. If you already have all files on the Amiga there is no need for such an archive.

but the installer looks for system.zip to decompress ?

Trying to follow instructions here,
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicwe...ctionsos39.htm

but am obviously getting lost....

I cant mount my own HD in WinUAE. The installer on the floppy disk looks for a system.zip which I am supposed to create using winuae after mounting the supplied HDF in winuae.

Pain!

You need instructions ?

I don't know it exactly but from what I understand the procedure is as follows:

1. install ClassicWB inside WinUAE
2. archive all installed files into a ZIP archive
3. transfer the ZIP archive to the Amiga
4. install your Amiga HDD (i.e. make it bootable) and unpack the ZIP archive to it.

Now you say you want to create the ZIP archive on the Amiga. How do you get the files you want to zip to the Amiga ?

IMHO your problem is not step 2 (create ZIP archive), but step 3 (transfer ZIP archive), because you were supposed to connect your Amiga HDD to the PC so that you can copy the ZIP archive directly to it. Now that your Amiga HDD does not work on the PC, you need another way to transfer the archive.

I'm gettiung to the stage where I'm not sure what I want lol

Thomas I think you have it nailed. I can't do 3. Because of this I'm struggling to do 1 and 2 as well. I don't have a WinUAE OS to install into (this would have been my HDD, but because the HDD won't work in windows....)

So, should my next step be to get OS 3.9 on to my 3.1 that I have running on winUae and go from there? I won't be able to put the HDD in the PC BUT, at least with everything running in winUAE I should be able to create the archive and then transfer it to Amiga Via CF.

Sounds good! Take a backup of your 3.1 install first? You are running WinUAE in directory mode, not HDF mode, I assume? You'll need to in order to then be able to access the files to sip them. I'm guessing the installer does not want a zip of an hdf file.

The AUX handler in DEVS won't copy properly, BTW, as it's a reserved name in Windows.

To get a cf hard working, I had to look up the hitachi microdrive driver from the net and tell Windows to use that for the driver for my CF reader.

I recommend using an HDF and then archiving onto a directory drive FROM WITHIN WINUAE. If you do it from Windows you will probably corrupt some filenames and directory structures and this will give you MANY nightmares.

Use an Amiga compression system like LHA instead of ZIP. You can get LHA38.run on Aminet:
http://aminet.net/package/util/arc/lha
(this executable will install LHA archiver and unarchiver on your system. Directory Opus will probably not have it included so you need this)
