Scart to HDMI converter

So finally having to get rid of my 40 inch 11 year old bravia, due to working at home and need more space, which had every connection type going on it, so was great for connecting miggies too.

Anyway I have an RGB to scart connector. I did a search for Scart to HDMI and there seems to be loads and loads on Amazon.

Any recommendations on good scart to HDMI Upscalers. Any experiences. I am not looking for perfect don't want to spend 100s.

@DanyPPC this is exactly the one I have and it's very good. I can plug my Oric 1 to any HDMI monitor. It does RGB, when cheapo ones only do composite. Excellent choice.

I paid 25 euro for that one. Cheap ones cost 10 euro but are shite and you're not sure if they'll work depending on your signal. Waiting for a friend to buy it and to test it on his NES with a french SCART cable (he's in germany with a HDMI only TV and can't use his NES)

I have a Retrotink 2X SCART box which is doing a great job on my PS1 and Saturn - no detectable lag and an excellent picture. I will be testing it on my Amiga when it returns from being recapped (hopefully soon) so will update the thread then.

I have tried the cheaper ones in the past and have not been happy with the quality and lag, but your mileage will probably vary on this.

or go for 300 or 500 euro adapters... Frankly I'm very happy with the quality of my 25 euro adapter.

I used it once on my Oric on a VGA only monitor... I had to use SCART to HDMI to VGA... and the result was very good.

Just tested on my amiga through RCA/YUV (the yellow cinch) + 3 meter cinch cable (shorter is best but I was too lazy to look for a shorter one) + RCA to SCART + SCART to HDMI here are a few pics






I resized them 25% to fit the site, and the light may reflect a bit (the white shroud is not on the screen) also there's a "shadow" effect (mixing 2 pictures) that isn't visible by the eye (just noticed it now)

So the pixel aren't crisp, but a bit fuzzy but it's really not bad!

Thanks for the heads up and pics. Fuzzy is probably better than really crisp. Kind of CRT effect without filters ?

EDIT: Seems there is no UK stock. Not so cheap when you add in postage and import tax from america. Can you remember the sort of prices you paid for one ?

CRT is better than that. But you don't want CRT. I don't think I had to buy my adapter in the US.

Even if you have RCA/cinch, you can get hold of a RCA to SCART and use the converter (which has also a hdmi INPUT...). Good product. Comes with a 5V mains adapter but you can use a USB powersupply if you have the connector (jack). I borrowed it to another converter that doesn't work

I ordered one on the 26th of May and it arrived yesterday.

+ progressive/lace switching is instantaneous. This is actually very nice, just like back in the CRT days.
- image quality is not very nice, quite grainy, almost looks like my RGB has been downgraded to s-video
- it is 25fps, this device does a forced deinterlace of a progressive input signal.

I had my OSSC connected to my display with HDMI and started a table in Pinball Fantasies, which is a very nice way to see if the signal chain is 50fps or not. Via the OSSC, the table scrolled butter smooth. Then I swapped the SCART and HDMI to the HD converter and it had that classic 25Hz stutter. At least it is a constant stutter, so the device does not forcibly upconvert to 60Hz, which results in sudden jerks.

So unfortunately the search for a cheap solution continues. This one is just like the rest, it's enough if you're happy that you manage to get any kind of picture at all.

I forgot to report back on the Retrotink - it has no perceptible lag on an appropriate display but the image quality is not good on the Amiga, there is a lot of ghosting (not noticed when connected directly via SCART to an LCD or on a CRT). It does run at the full frame rate however.

Doing some further workbench use with the scart hdmi after posting, I noticed an annoying lag in the mouse too. I can't recommend this.

I assume that there are varying results for different displays? I know that that is the case for the OSSC anyhow.

This one outputs 720p or 1080p, so the results will not be as varied.

On the Retrotink 2X-SCART I found noticeable and irritating lag (most apparent with the mouse in Workbench as noted above and on games like Sensible Soccer) on TVs and none on fast modern PC monitors. The trade off was that the games looked a lot better on the TVs than they did on the monitor when they weren't moving. My most recent test was with a Dell P1917S 5:4 monitor with HDMI and it looked just about OK with Amiga stuff, but had to go back due to multiple dead pixels - there was no detectable control lag on this screen.

There is probably a decent tradeoff somewhere but it would involve a lot of testing of different displays and adapter boxes. I am after a 4:3 or 5:4 display which further limits me, and I have found that older 4:3 displays that would otherwise be fine generally don't like displaying 50hz signals over DVI.

I have likely also complicated matters by using a Philips CM8833 CRT which looks fantastic, even in comparison to other good quality CRTs, but takes up loads of room and is too small.
