What speakers do you use for your Commodore computers?

Er, what can I say after what has been posted...

• Definitely use a modern system, things have happened in sound (several generations of it). Mobile speakers certainly blow 90s 2.0 systems out of the water. An expensive Hifi system is still likely to be a good Hifi system.
• Definitely do not use the C= monitor speaker(s), or CRT TV speakers they are an afterthought. Mine are turned off, and in some cases, removed from the insides

Logitech Z200 stereo computer speakers (A set on both the Amiga and another set shared between the PC and Playstation Classic)

Not fantastic but they do the job for me, as long as things sound right im happy, im a long way from being an Audiophile lol

Recently I obtained this vintage, wonderfully looking set for Amiga parties.



Its sound is surprisingly clear and bass mighty. And it fits just perfecty to Amiga, even the yellowing level matches

And why not? I find that having the speakers in the monitor helps with the awful stereo separation the Amiga has. The sounds get blended in the monitor before coming out more balanced.
Any discrete speakers I have used have made the Amiga unbearable to listen to because of the separation. This is why I think the internal speakers are the best option, despite not being of amazing quality.

Because speakers screwed into plastic housings will cause the plastic to shake which (I guarantee) is not the sound that you want.

And because, as I wrote, they are an afterthought. There's only one tiny speaker per channel, and one that has a range of about 500-5000 Hz, no dedicated amp, etc, etc, etc, etc. They're a perfect example of how to not output sound, ever.

In the case of monitor/TV speakers, they will also (after some time) obviously affect the actual picture output so that you get color aberrations from the introduced magnetic field. If you ever turn them on. Removing them reduces some dead weight, so that's what you do. Always.

The only true speakers to use on an A500 are the way we did it in the old days, hooked up to some late 1960's/early 1970's wood grained hifi and tired speakers that once were high end but became mooshy with decades of use, all of which you got from a thrift store or when a relative died.

Old hifi was what I was using when I also used it to listen to CDs and all. It was great! (also used to mix with amiga & Midi sounds on OctaMED) Now that I can't put it and the speakers close to my miggy, I use 2 devices (with a cinch=>jack adapter):

- classic soundblaster speakers: problem is that they're either loud or you hear nothing... And it must be plugged to mains too. If you plug headphones on that, it's okay for a silent game, good sound quality
- BOSE Bluetooth® SoundLink Color II. Not using the bluetooth of course, but using a jack. Excellent sound, no need for power supply as it has batteries. Also used as-is on the headphones output of the CD32.

I find the sound coming through the 1084s speakers to be quite pleasant - it's hardly hi-fi, but it's decent, and suits the vibe of the Amiga well. It's like a guitar amp - the aim isn't perfect reproduction, but finding the right amplifier/speaker/cabinet combo to give a really fitting tone coloration to the source signal.

Also doesn't hurt that it helps to dampen some of the aliasing noise from 8-bit samples running at <= 22 KHz.

The 1084s speakers are a pain. I would call it plastic sound. Not the good plastic. The music/sfx sounds so much better with a decent hi-fi system.

Being a bit of a metal head back in the day, all my computer stuff went to aux in on whatever amp I had around.. These days its mostly DAC to a pair of Yamaha HS8.

Lately I've been running UAE through the soundbar and honestly, I think I prefer that even more. Tight center that goes down to about 100hz coupled with faint surround to fill out the room.

I think one aspect that ppl forget about is that 50/60 hz interference hum and magnetic discoloration on CRTs. These days you can just place whatever next to the screen and it wont affect sound/picture
