No, the problem is with the option in the Workbench preferences editor that replaces the MagicWB daemon on AmigaOS 3.1.4.

In what way? The setting works as expected here - MagicWB icons have the correct colours when that setting is enabled, and behaviour is the same as it is in 3.9. If there aren't enough colours available, and something requires higher precision than the icons, then those pens will be taken.

This is the solution. If you are NOT in the UK, you need to use either amazon.com or your "local" Amazon site (e.g. .ca for me) and look up the book. My copy is already ordered and should arrive by the 11th.

Oh, thanks. Now it is working, do not ask me how, I don't know why...

May I kindly suggest to include something like xref_v1.1.lha, which was a great help in the creation of tooling for development purposes?

It scans the Autodocs, Includes, AmigaGuides and UNIX man pages and cross-references them, using a binary format, that is fast. It's library understands ARexx.

A typical application was to have GoldEd show the synopsis for a function/definition of a constant in a seperate pane below the text, when hovering over the function/constant, also adding completion, afair.

I just discovered a review on Aminet I had written back then (didn't know, it existed, lol), which gives a bit more info.
I never knew that, thank you! And the library and tools even come with source code.

I am a lazy person, so I stuck with the first solution that provides something similar, for use with CygnusEd and ARexx. This would be DevKit from AmigaLibDisk 297 (1989), which was written by Peter Cherna. I have been using that for more than 30 years now

What exactly do these programs accomplish, and what is not working as intended? I can see that these predate the AmigaOS 3.9 release, so that might explain why the icon.library from that release onward seems not to account for that functionality.

Could be, but then the author probably deserves a rest for having written the book

I just ordered a printed copy and am mighty curious about the contents. The page preview omits the operating system documentation sections, and this is what I am so curious about.

When I started out writing Amiga software accurate and understandable introductory documentation was still hard to come by for a 17 year old with a bit of pocket money to save and spend.

More than 30 years later I found that the books that would have helped me the most were the Amiga Programmer's handbook, volumes 1+2 by Eugene P. Mortimore (that is, had I known that they existed and could have afforded them).

Mr. van den Oosterkamp's book seems to follow the same approach as these books did, which is very, very promising indeed!

Browsing the table of contents, however, shows that we still lack something essential for Amiga 'C' development: a robust interactive source level debugger. Without that, you'll end up spending so much time finding and fixing bugs in your software you'll lose all respect for the platform and any motivation you have had will evaporate with it

Mines on the way, I ordered it from amazon.com. I would buy it again if a Kindle version was available too. It’s more of a convenance to read on iPad.

Would be lovely if it were portable, but this seems to be geared towards the PowerPC platform which means that the entire toolchain to support GCC will be involved.

The only AmigaOS 2.x/3.x native debugger which also comes with full source code is the one which shipped as part DICE 1.15. It was last updated in 1997 and, from what I learned, it would need some more work to make it suitable for use today. Development stopped when DICE was no longer commercially viable as a product

Hi amigueros!
From what I've read, v3.2 will include Reaction. I think a good choice and evolution.
But, for all of us who want lighter applications, either using Intuition or GadTools... is there any improvement planned for GadTools? For example: being able to easily include an image on a button (like gadgetrender / selectrender) or simply make a Toggle button (like GACT_TOGGLESELECT).

Thanks for your effort!

Scaling based on font size is new for 3.2 GadTools.

You can use ReAction gadgets to accomplish what you want; it will not be significantly slower/heavier than GadTools if you are specifying the sizes of the gadgets yourself. It is only really hierarchical layouting that takes the time.

Do we have an introduction or tutorial on using Reaction in your own code?

No, but there are a lot of examples in the 3.2 NDK.

Okay, nice...

Btw, are there any ideas about a future effort to support a unified skinning /palette prefs system in Amiga OS?

Seems everybody is using Visualprefs and Birdy right now, which seems less than a perfect solution.
