4-channel sound
This topic may be of public interest, hence I decided not to PM Toni about it.
4-channel sound. At least on my box this doesn't work - I may rather express it the Simon & Garfunkel way, "Sound of Silence" Yes, that's what you hear. :P What speaker system do I need for this to work? After enabling this, WinUAE instantly jumps to "Sound-DISabled" setting; looks it detects my hardware not suitable for that...? Last edited by andreas; 28 July 2006 at 19:15. |

Funny answer
Yes, stereo sound works, but I also want to test out 4-channel sound, if you allow :P |

Why bother with 4 channels when you can overcome this limit?
For an experiment: choose a frequency of 44100 Hz, with Stereo sound; then play an MP3 through Paula, NOT AHI (Eagle player is good at it). After that play the same MP3 through AHI. They should sound the SAME. In practice, Paula should have overcome the 4-channels limit. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Toni!) |

Stereo = 4 paula channels are mixed to 2 physical output channels.
4-channel = 4 paula channels are _not_ mixed but output directly to 4 physical outputs. (mostly useless feature really..) You probably need "5.1" or better sound card. |

Thanks Toni, that might explain it.
I have a good ol' Live! Value. You have one guess why I am so interested in this feature: stereo sounds a bit weird with my Sonix tracks, i. e. damn different to a real 1084S. At least I had a hope that it will sound more "Amiga" in true 4-channel mode. Question #1: Is that hope realistic? Question #2: Which stereo separation setting comes closest to a 1084S? |

100% separation is like hardware - 0,3 on the left and 1,2 on the right. You may have to play with the output sample rate and interpolation to get a sound you like. Don't forget the audio filter settings, as well.

The Amiga has four sound channels (0, 1, 2 and 3). The first and the last (0 and 3) are on the left stereo channel and the two inbetween (1 and 2) are on the right stereo channel.
Well, the official documentation says that 0,3 are on the right and 1,2 are on the left. But because the A500, which has them swapped, is the most famous Amiga ever, it has become the unofficial standard. |

OH SORRY. I managed to read a comma "," as a decimal point (in Germany, the decimal point is replaced by a comma, i. e. 1.125 (nine eighths) becomes 1,125, easily misread as "one thousand one hundred twenty five")
