I think it would be better to replace the Kickstart ROM with a mechanism to load modules from harddrive, as AOS4.x does. I don't know if kickstart changes are feasible for this update, but I'd like to be able to remove trackdisk.device, or at the very least only mount DF0 if a floppy drive is detected. |

Don't we already have this in early startup?

This is pretty incredible. It's like Microsoft still releasing Windows XP service packs in the year 2030.
My A500+ runs Workbench 3.1. Would this be a simple to run update file? |

Is there any way to get in with this beta? or does it involve secret handshakes?

Knowing AmigaOS (the whole thing, not just Workbench) helps. Using real Amigas, too. Accepting that it's going to be work is a prerequisite. If you ever clicked through 300 fonts in Intellifont, then you know what I'm talking about. Send me a PM, if you're still interested. |

You can disable drives at boot, but this has to be done at every reset, it's a long way from being an ideal solution. Another option is to put "assign DF0: dismount" in your startup-sequence, but this is just hiding the issue, not fixing it. Quote:
That assumes that ROMSplit and Remus will be updated to handle any changes in Kickstart, which is a big assumption since they havent been updated since 2010. I'm sure some people do still use floppy disks, but I haven't used them for more than 15 years. |

Updating the ROM will require removing the existing chip from the motherboard and replacing it with a new one. The original chips are read only and can not be updated, and even in the case of an EPROM, the Amiga can't do it by itself, an external programming device is needed. There are certain accelerators and expansions that make it possible to load the Kickstart from some more modern media (e.g. flash memory), in such a situation a software only update may be possible. |

Well the terminology has fluctuated a bit over the years, but how I would put it is AmigaOS covers all aspects of the operating system: Kickstart (core libraries required for booting up a basic system, stored in the ROM), Workbench (the main graphical user interface portion with all the various tools and utilities) and AmigaDOS (the underlying disk operating system, command line based stuff). What this 3.1.4 update exactly will cover I don't know, but odds are things will be fixed and updated in all of these segments and thus require a ROM update. Could you just use an updated Workbench loaded from disk but stick with the old ROM? Maybe. But many of the interesting updates such as robust >4GB disk support, 060 support etc. kinda require the changes in the ROM. Last edited by ajk; 26 April 2018 at 07:30. |

Gotcha. I'd be interested in making a Retro Recipes video about it all when the time is right. Link in my bio.

Also please stop spamming the boards otherwise. You have a thread for your uploads (this is why I suggested you making one like everyone else should), you don't have to post every other thread pointing to your youtube channel. End of OT. |
