IDE hard drive probs

Hi. I have a BSC Tandem ide controller in my A2000 with a 4.03gb HD attached.

My kickstart roms are v2 37.175

When I load the program it says my HD is 25mb. It then makes a partion 25mb big. This actually turns out to be 83mb big. I now have a 83mb HD that shows up when I load with my WB disk. However I cant install 2.1 onto it because it says to use the install program, but the HD doesnt show up when booting via the WB install disk.

I put my 37.300 A600 rom in my A2000. However the program could no longer find the IDE device when searching. It just stalled and froze the computer. When I put the 37.175 roms back in it foudn the HD ok.

Maybe someone could give me a solution?

Would formatting via winuae work?

How do I install a bootable WB on it? DoctorQ any ideas?

Thanks all

Few quotes from the manual:

Important! If you want to install a Workbench 2.0 or higher
from the beginning you have to use the installation program of
the Workbench. Therefor please read the Workbench manual. It
isn't enough to copy only the Workbench disk onto the harddisk.

That's all. You have now installed your harddisk. Please reboot
your computer by clicking the REBOOT gadget and your system
will start the Workbench from your new harddisk, provided that
you copied it as described in the section above.

So the manual says it is bootable...

Would the 37.350 rom help?

@Smiley1635

The quotes you have pasted above comes from the manual to HDInstTools. Most likely the manual from the HDInstTools package on Aminet says the same.

Even though this doc is included with the installation disk for the Tandem IDE, the quotes doesn't count for the Tandem IDE controller card. If the docs for HDInstTools should have been modified to cover only the features of the Tandem IDE, this part would have been removed.

The only way to get a "bootable" harddrive, is to create a boot disk to boot from, and then set it up to continue the boot from the harddrive.

Installing a newer Kickstart rom will not help you, as it is the controller card itself that would need a boot rom/chip.

DoctorQ: I want a new kickstart (3.1) not because of the boot factor, but because older os version dont support hardrives over 4gb very well. I can only partiton 83mb of the drive. On IRC someone said this was due to it currently not supporting 64bit, and its wrapping itself round giving round HD sizes.

How can I make a basic boot disk for the HD?

It boots ok from my workbench disk but workbench takes forever to load.

Thanks,

I just answered your question above, what additional reasons for getting a newer ROM isn't mentioned. Kickstart 3.1 doesn't support harddrives over 4 GB anyway, patches are still needed in order to use drives bigger than 4 GB.

Even though you say only 83 MB is partitioned, have you tried moving the partition slider? If moved to the left, it might be possible that you see the partition size change to something rather more than 83 MB.

As for the boot disk, you will need to find out what needs to be loaded in order to execute the AT file that should be placed in the Expansion drawer. I don't know what you need to do it, so you will have to try your way out of it.

!!EDIT!! - Now the harddrive doesnt show up on workbench even with the ATdevice installed!!

Ok I took some pics of the hdinstall screens. (couldnt get screenshots to work)

This is the main screen

All the info on the right is exactly right for my HD. Yet it says its only 25mb big.

The partition screen again says its only 25mb big.

Is there anything I can change on this screen to 'trick' it into making a larger partition?

And when I do make a partition, it actually makes an 83mb partition making me think that there is a way to get a larger size.

Try using HDToolbox instead, it might help. Just remember to specify the correct driver otherwise it will not find your drive.

Typing the driver name (complete and case-sensitive!) after the command name in shell.

You need at least the version of HDToolbox which came with Workbench 3.0. Earlier versions don't accept different driver names, neither as tooltypes nor in the shell.
