USB/FW Harddrive in WinUAE possible?

I have been trying to connect a physical IDE harddrive to be used in WinUAE, but for some reason WinUAE won't accept it. After checking the log I found this:

---cut from log---
opening device '\\?\sbp2#prolific_pl3507_combo_device&(1394_atapi_rev_1.00)&lun0#0050770e0000088b#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}'
not a direct access device, ignored (type=14)
---cut from log---

"not a direct access device"... so that's the problem.... but is there any way to force it? Since putting the drive in a USB/FW encasing is much simpler than dismantling my PC (it's a small factor format PC, so connecting a secondary drive means one hour of work to pull out the guts of the system). Any solution?

Hmm.. 0 = disk drive. 14 is "other"..

What does Windows Device Manager say about the disk drive? (properties/details-tab, "Compatible Ids" or "Hardware Ids") Does it say "GenDisk" or something else?
