Any thoughts on 3D programs?

Hi all, I'm in the process of trying to put together an amiga "hard drive" for a raspberry Pi 3, and I wanted to include some apps to explore. I've never delved into 3D beyond a quick dabble with Cinema 4D released as a coverdisk on CU Amiga, so any thoughts on a beginner friendly 3D program I can try to get to grips with? Cheers. :-)

I used to use Real3D, which worked differently to most 3D renderers on the Amiga, and the results like this (I think) look lovely:

Long time no see in these parts!!! Hope you, the missus 'n' the cats are all well.

Anyway, there are a few options for beginners when it comes to 3D packages on the Ami. As Foebane recommended, there's Real 3D.....but I can't say I've ever used it much, so I'm not sure how easy it is to get into it for beginners. Perhaps he or someone else can comment on how easy it is to get into for novices.

From my own experience, though, Aladdin 4D and Cinema 4D would be my picks for beginners and there seems to be enough documentation (e.g. see HERE) and video tutorials (e.g. on YouTube) around for both on the net and in the old mags like CU Amiga. Earlier versions of Imagine might be worth looking at too before you graduate to more intermediate/expert packages like Lightwave, Tornado3D and the later releases of Imagine.

My 2c, but your mileage may vary.....still, hope you find something in my ramblings mate that helps!

As a beginner I used Turbo Silver, Imagine 3, and then Cinema 4D, also you can try Caligari 24 (which I still have in the box with VHS tutorial.)

Hi Angus!

I 've been using Lightwave since 1996 and I can say that it is quite user friendly for beginners as well. There is a vast repository of 3D resources for it as well as video tutorials here on EAB ftp server.

If you search for Lightwave on
grandis.nu/eabsearch you will get many results. The latest version ever released for the Amiga is 5.0r. Ignore 5.1 and 5.2.

I'm not an expert in 3D programs, i just add a few old program names not mentioned that treat the 3D matter:

- Skulpt 3D
- RayStorm
- Pongo
- Reflection
- PixPro2
- Calligari
- Impact
- Draw4D-Pro

Guys, thanks very much for the advice. (How is the Western City, Carlo-San!) ;-)

I believe I messed briefly with Cinema4D, which was landscape based, I made some nice mountains! I will research your suggestions, all the best to you all. :-)

Are you sure you don't mean Vista Pro? That was all about terrain generation, whereas Cinema 4D is a scene modeller of the same vague idea as Imagine, Real 3D and Lightwave. Both Cinema4D and Vista Pro were included on CU Amiga cover CDs back in the day, and well worth a look...

I'm sure you're right, Daedalus, and I've meixed up the titles in my head.

Lightwave 3D is sounding quite attractive I have to say, Muadib - not that I was, and remain, a Babylon 5 fan, obviously. :-)
