Non Dos disks question...

I would like to ask a question...

Most people they will agree that non dos disks are disks that they have a custom format from the developer of the game that is not readable from amiga dos. Did the crack groups had to retain this custom format for the game to play?

I know its just curiosity and nothing else.

Depends on the format.

If the disk is AmigaDOS disk with 1 protection track and the game loads using sectors/tracks instead of visible files, theres no reason to mess with that unless the game is really small and might single file or be ripped to its original files because its so small.

Depending on the copy protection would determine how a cracker would do the disk format. In some cases, doing a dumb read of the disk and then inserting a suitable sector loader was quick enough and easy enough to crack the game, other times a 1 off copy protected disk was easier and quicker to crack to AmigaDOS files instead.

I really enjoyed all the Fairlight releases back in the ninenties! Amazing stuff! I am sure that i will never forget the remarkable sound of the FLT cracktro.

After reading your reply, i must say that my curiosity grew even more xD I found one interview οf yours that you gave to the retro hour podcast I was able to found a copy of the book you mentioned and i started reading it Hopefully one day i will be able to understand a few things of the magic of cracking xD

Not really related to the subject... but you can get non-Dos disk icons on a Workbench sometimes on hard drive systems with no floppy plugged in,

They're really just orphaned .info (icon) files that are pointing to HD partitions that have just been removed.

On topic, some demos came in non-DOS formatted floppies, and the coding crews wrote their own loaders. Reason was, they could keep the continuity of the demo playback, loading up the next bit as the current one played.

They weren't just ripping games. They were making art too.

Orphaned .info files? Never heard of that one. Is this an OS3.9 thing? Surely OS3.9 isn't messy like that - it wouldn't be the Amiga way!
