Hey Cosmic,
If you'd said you wanted text, I'd have typed the pages out for you. It would have been almost as fast as setting up each page on the flatbed scanner. Since you have them now, I have some OCR software on an old cover CD which I think is a full version. I'll see if I can find it for you tomorrow and upload it. prowler |

Hi Cosmic,
The OCR software I have is Abbyy FineReader 5.0 Home Edition on a PC Answers cover CD from June 2002. It looks like it'll do the job alright. The only limitation the Home Edition has relative to the Professional Edition is that it is English only and has no spellchecker. It is the full version, but requires online registration which is, of course, no longer available. I've downloaded a serial number for it this evening, and I'll see if it unlocks the software tomorrow. If it does, I'll either upload it for you or send it to you on a CD-R. How does that sound? prowler |

sounds intresting
I`m also lookin for some ocr software that Ive got somewhere but seem to have run in to a flaky HD problem, not to mention MS thinkin I`ve not got a genuine version of xp also I`m away for long bank holiday weekend and when I come back have to make sure the flat is tidy and respectable as I might be movein to some where with a bedroom (luxury) so will probably have to throw a blanket over the 5-6 pc cases i have knocking around and take the nails out of the walls that have all my wires hanging of them so hectic couple of weeks to look forward to, so if you could remind me in say 2 weeks I`d appreciate it |

Good luck with all that, mate!
Regarding the OCR software: During my online search for a serial number it was evident that there are later versions of Abbyy FineReader available for download, but version 5.0 is compatible with all versions of Windows from 95 to XP and is probably a lot less bloated than the later versions. If I can unlock it, I'll try it on the bitmaps I uploaded yesterday to see what the results are like. Then just let me know when and where you're settled. |

@cosmicfrog:
This evening I installed ABBYY FineReader 5 Home Edition from PC Answers June 2002 Cover CD in Windows XP on the 1GHz Pentium III machine I use for AmigaOS XL and unlocked it with the serial number I found with Google last week. The files required for installation are a reasonable 24MB compressed, and that includes an uninstaller so it's no bloatware, and it's lightning fast in use considering the P3's vintage. It's as easy as (1) Open Image, (2) Read, (3) Save! I've processed the GFA BASIC 3.5 Interpreter manual pages I scanned last week and uploaded the converted text files as raw MS Word documents, i.e. with no corrections. As you will see, there are a small number of corrections required where the curvature of the pages near the spine has distorted and defocussed the characters, and a few formatting errors to be tidied up, but, on the whole, I think the OCR has done a great job! If it would interest you to have a copy of this application, let me know and I'll upload it. I also have the four page article from the magazine describing the features of the program, which you might find useful if you wish to use it for anything other than simple typed pages. prowler |

Unzip Parts 1-5 in the same folder and run Setup. (Serial Number is in Part 1.) I'll scan the magazine pages for you if you think you'll need them, but it's a very simple application to use. Enjoy! |

Hi All,
There's a Step-By-Step Guide to converting documents with ABBYY FineReader in this week's Micro Mart magazine (Issue 1055). Admittedly the version featured in the tutorial is later than the one I uploaded here, but it does show how this application makes light work of converting documents. prowler |
