Joystick for A1200?

Hi all, I'm just getting back into the Amiga scene having acquired an A1200. I need a joystick, are there any good new options available? I've googled around without much joy. Is it just a case of something second hand from eBay?

if you get a joystick get one with microswitches dont bother with leaf springs.

as for the brand its always personal prefrence.

I use a PS2 controller with mine, you just need to get an adapter.

PS2 is probably a good bet if you can get the adapter. if you can't get one, Megadrive & compatible 3 button pads are easy to find and sometimes very cheap - nice if you want to organise a 4 player event etc, if you like those. you'll get an additional control button then too, in _some_ games which a lot of traditional joysticks don't support.

I really prefer regular joysticks and I just got my first Suzo The Arcade stick earlier this week which have been on my wish list for a long time.
Have been playing with it for a few hours yesterday and today and it is really great. My progress in Superfrog was better than it has ever been before, and I blame the stick.

dont make no difference how old it is as far as im concerned they last a long time if looked after.

The Arcade stick I'm using is actually 24 years old, but is working perfectly. After a good clean, it feels just like new.

It's the model you see on the picture above. It's called 'The Arcade' and is made by Suzo who also makes professional arcade controllers, and it feels very much like one.

does it not slide around on the desk and pitch and roll on its suction cups? (if it has them?) I've never got on with those types. I also have a 25 year old quickshot and its terrible, but it is a totally different design, dodgy scifi flightstick looking thing. Avoid these types like the plague:

It doesn't have suction cups, only plain rubber feet and no it doesn't slide around.

I have a Quickshot as well, and this is something completely different. The action is very small and precise, very much like a real arcade stick. The stick itself even has a metal rod inside to keep it stiff and durable.

i was going to mention you can actually make a joystick.its simple enough.

and the parts are very easy to get.

Yes, Suzo actually still makes pro arcade joysticks like this one:


If you don't mind a thick joystick, one could just stick one of those in a box or drill a hole in your gaming table for it.

i'm sure its very easy to wire up a 1 or 2 button controller, since its just switches. ideally though it would have maybe 8 buttons and a chip for a cd32 mode but it would be nearly as big as a desktop machine itself

I can also recommend the Suzo Arcade joysticks*, they're the best by a stretch. I've been using them all my life on Amiga, and of course on WinUAE these days .

How? If you want to use this with WinUAE/PC do yourself a favour and get a quality d-sub DE-9 to USB converter. Most of the converters poll at about 125Hz, but if you're serious about your emulation you'd want one that works at 1000Hz. IMO there's only one currently, which is the 2600-daptor by Tom Hafner (Hafner Enterprises), who created excellence if you ask me.

*PS. If you need two fire-buttons, you can also try and get the Suzo Arcade Turbo, equally great.
