The OS3.1 join command gives the same error here like chip mentioned. If the result is changed to "ram:megafile" it works. If you want a more powerful join command for OS2.0+ then try http://aminet.net/package/util/sys/JoinReplace It works also with no full path.

Yeah, just like I said, source and destination directories must be different when using wildcards that may pick the destination file too. There's no magic or tricks, just remember that.
