Mental illness is a terrible thing not only for the person suffering but their closest family as well. I'm sorry to hear it has affected your family in such a tragic way.

Also sorry to hear about your collection and your families possesions which were lost in the fire.

I'd say something unusual here: yes, your collection matters, but what matters more is that no one living got hurt.
My thoughts are with you and your family Denis.

Shit...

I can totally identify with you Denis, my mother had serious case of bipolar / manic depression and she did some fucked up things in her time too, she didn't burn down the house, but did do some very serious things.

I think the best thing in all this for you Denis is the number of people you have to share this burden and help each other. A Mother and 4 brothers/sisters you are a very rich man !! Having each other at this very difficult time is important and I hope you find strength in each other to cope.

As for the insurance I think you’ll be fine your father is mentally ill, he can’t be held accountable for his actions so the insurance will cover it. (although they will try to get out of it at first)

Try not to hate your father for his actions, I’m sure like my mother he had his up’s as well as downs, he may be on one hell of a down at the moment but one day he will have to come to terms with what he’s done and this will be 10 time worse than you guys are feeling now.

I love the fact you can share this devastating personal news on this forum. It say loads about the way this is run and the people who manage it. hats off to you guys for allowing this to happen and creating such a great environment.

P.S. I’m not going to apologise for my use of language, I think there’s a time and place for it and this is definitely it!!

Sad news.
I hope you can handle it fast, and move on.
If you loose all those memories that were inside the house, best thing to do is get new ones by getting your life back on tracks and live good moments so you can replace those memories for new ones.

thanks guys for your support, i'm actually very shocked about what happened.

i don't feel hate about him, only non-sense. the problem with bipolar/schizophrenic people is that they take at first their medics, as they are needed for them to live normally, once meds did their duties, the person think she is naturally fine, and then she stops taking the meds. The result is known : he or she is going down under the ground !

the french laws are protecting people against 'healing obligations', because in some case, children could potentially ask for interning a parent to get the heritance (understand : money). the backside here is that the law never gave us the possibility to prevent this horror by requesting an injonction of healing obligation.

Our state is at failure in this case. If he was a normal guy, for such an act, you'd normally get jailed. No, instead we had to wait for a very serious event like this one to happen to get him locked up in the asylum......

About talking about this personal event, i just couldn't act like if nothing had appened, because i was the main gardian of amiga games, always ready to pull disk images to anyone needing it.

One of the things which hurt me the most is that Richard Joseph heritage is definitely lost, since he gave me things that even his family or friends didn't had with them, there is also the ocean france development disks, i have imaged most of them, but they are all physically lost, same as what the guy at TLK games gave me.

this lead me also to say that it's also one of the main reason i wanted to help to preserve amiga games, because you never know in life what can happen, some games in my collection are lost, and i will never be able to get them back, i think about the infomedia games, like explora, (i hopefully kept in my flat Rockstar!).

strangely, games like the spanish one (viaje al centro de la tierra, lorna, albedo, dragon flight, fate gates of dawn, ambermoon, amberstar and few others were in my flat !).

oh well.......

If no-one is hurt, at least you still have your family. Your computer collection can be probably re-created, although with problems, and hardship.

I don't know what the laws are in France, but perhaps your father can be helped [more] now, assuming he hasn't had any before.

In the meantime, I'm sorry to hear you've had such problems, and I hope things get better soon for you and your family.

PS, my Dad has Alzheimers now, and it has been a burden for him and our family, I don't wish these kind of problems on anyone.

It's not that important, but in Denis' case there are things that can't be replaced at all.

Denis,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I have a brother who was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. One night he lost it and my parents had to have him committed. He finally got the help he needed, but after a while the meds weren't helping and they have not yet been able to find meds that work. He now lives in assisted living and really hasn't improved.

Hope your father gets the help he needs.

Yeah, I seem to remember I referred to his collection as Aladdin's Cave.
Such a travesty.

It's only material stuff, but still...
I'd be so bold to compare it to someone burning down the Louvre, destroying priceless art, but perhaps that's just me idk.
Yes I'm passionate about my C= gear.
