Post Rating games with bonuses in mind

Hi,

Since it's no secret members who participate in retro-gaming related threads follow-ups here often vote on popular Amiga gaming sites, and since individual votes can greatly vary for the same popular game, I would like to illustrate a bit this idea of rating games with bonuses in mind.

First, here under is a list of the grades I give to around 100 games.

Feel free to react to the bonuses you consider unfair.
If you convince me, I may lower the grade back to normal.

6 Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight
6 Quest for the Time-Bird, The
6 Roadwars
6 Shadow of the Beast III

This is to illustrate that when I add a bonus to a game, it's always within certain boundaries.

For those who don't get the idea, I can provide the reasons why I choose to apply it.

If anyone's that interested you can find my votes here. Note that I always vote what I feel the game is worth and not, for example, trying to raise the average score for a game

EDIT: I think I've slightly misunderstood the thread idea, sorry...

Don't feel bad. I don't understand it either.

@Deleauvive
Are we meant to copy our top 100 games from Lemon Amiga and post them here?

Oh yay! That would be fun
A rating is a rating and nothing more. I doesn't hurt people or make them do strange things (like making this thread, oh wait...). I think it's fair enough to head over to Lemon and look for yourself if you are interested. Why should be anyone interested in discussing your personal taste in games Deleauvive?

The link is enough I guess, thanks.

In an attempt to see how things have evolved in 20 years, I compared the acclaim a game received in reviews, and the way it is discussed here (and there).

I've come to the conclusion "eye candy" games (Project X, Shadow of the Beast II) still receive much praise, unlike games which are a tad more complex (Driller, Sentinel, Deuteros...).

Is it simply a matter of not having the time anymore to read game manuals ?

Have the mechanisms of such Amiga games dated at a faster rate than the technical qualities they bear (filled polygons, multi-directional scrolling) ?

So in the retro-gaming perspective, when I give an 8 to Gnome Ranger, mumbling "It was famous in its time, why should I comment my score since I don't mind not playing it now ? On to the next game !" The question : "Why nobody seem to care playing GR anymore ?" is left unanswered.

For example, Moonstone has a rather choppy sprite animation, but the fact that it's gory must have raised the average score, for some gamers are fond of blood spilling and head chopping in their games.

King of Chicago is a Cinemaware game ("Hype factor" +1 ) and has some violence and foul language.

When a game doesn't have a whdload, less people are exposed to it, especially when similar games had a better "luck" (+1 bonus)

When the adaptation from the CPC version wasn't so impressive (I can't say much about the C64 versions, since I am not familiar with it), -1 malus for the Amiga version.

Last but not least, I've read some games (Tennis Cup II) received indeed a 10% malus for the numerous floppy disk swapping involved to play it throughout !

If I'm totally honest I couldn't give a rats backside what anyone rates a game. I play a game and then form my own judgement. If you enjoy GR then my hat is off to you.. Personally I never played it (yet!!)

Thanks. I found quite a few gems in your list (Amiga port of New Zealand story, Time Bandit among others). You seem to enjoy cute little characters in your games . Reminds me that I should continue playing my saved session of Black & White...

That's because I am a cute little character.

Time Bandit is such a brilliant game. I wish more people knew about it.

Do you mean that, since it's overlooked, you have given it a 10 just for people to think it's that great ?
Cute character with a witty personality .

Where do you get that from? I gave it a 10 because I think it's one of my favourite Amiga games and I think it is "Awesome".

Don't fret. It's perfectly natural to defend the games we like most. Since you drew our attention on it, may be you could tell us what's so awesome about it.

If you asked me, I think Emerald Mine is a cute 'little' game in the Boulder Dash tradition, which deserves more recognition and I can give a few arguments (level editor, nice sprites).

Nevertheless, I reserve the use of the 10 ratings for games such as Elite or Speedball II.

Amazing to think it's an St port but yes it has a unique style all of it's own and really is worth playing, if only to see how odd it is

Actually a lot of why we rate so highly a game of the past is what is also tied into that memory of it.Iv'e played some sh!t in my time but often i'm quick to defend a poor game due to maybe something well realised outside of it's gameplay.Atmosphere in games is taken a little for granted but plays a huge part in shaping our emotional attachment

Personally i don't think Time Bandits is brilliant purely from it's gameplay merits but it's definitely one of my fave Amiga games that i hold quite dear as a memory

Hmm, there are over 200 'hacked' versions of that game with new levels. IMHO that game is well recognised and has it's fans. I guess the fact that the people that posted here do not have it within their top rated games sais nothing about how well a game is recognised

It says more about people's personal opinions of games. Which is what it's about isn't it?

The moral of this story, kids? Just because you like a game doesn't mean everyone else has to (and vice versa...).
