Gotek - Revisited

Hi all,

I wasn't going to say anything yet, but i really do have a hard time keeping secrets...

I am going to redo the Gotek floppy drive, it will be a combination of all of the good things that are already out in the wild and also a few new features that i cannot tell you about yet. I am rounding up the parts now and if all goes well in about 6 - 8 weeks i will have something to show. I will sell it hopefully for the same price as the basic Gotek on Ebay (~$39) and it will be preprogrammed for the Amiga so hopefully this will put a stop to the insane prices that people have been suffering. I'll pass this on to Stedy to see if this can also be implemented in the CD32

Hopefully Hervé can be persuaded to think about doing some more updates.

Thumbs up

That's fantastic news Kipper. I'm very interested to see what you can do in regard to the hardware.

I'm hoping that you'll find a way to make the thing fit easier into an Amiga case!

I wish there were a way to directly support the original author of the software. He might then be able to provide some new features.

no cut cases, (that would be optional) may be a little filing necessary, but nothing too major. The A500 will probably be the best for installation... oops, i said too much

Interesting stuff.

I don't know how the hardware works but most of our designs require firmware on the board to be able to upload a new flash image. (Though a few support raw JTAG flash uploading)

If a Gotek requires a firmware to be upgraded, I'd make sure you can find *something* you can legally distribute pre-flashed.

I imagine that both the original Gotek and Herve's Amiga firmware require legal permissions to be distributed as part of a product?

The basic Gotek unit (with 3-digit display) is under $20USD from China, including shipping.
Where did the $39 come from?

Here you go.
There are plenty of sellers selling at this price range, I bought several units a few months ago.

Looks like a generic floppy emulator. I'm guessing it works as Uberfreak has used it on his amiga.

They're not a knockoff, look at the 3rd picture in my link, it clearly shows the Gotek logo on the unit.

Before the Amiga firmware showed up, nearly all sellers advertised these units only as "floppy emulator", without the Gotek name.
Only after people started calling them "Goteks", many sellers started using that.

Looks different to mine. But if it works and they ship to your country then thumbs up.

What firmware does that gotek run?

The original one from Gotek of course, you need to flash Herve's FW for Amiga use.
The flashing cable is ~$3 from China, shipping included.

Mine was already flashed to 1.05 out of the box. Didn't want to mess with flashing.

Flashing is difficult. I need Windows XP.

I would like an external unit that could work as DF0 or DF1 with a switch. Not filing or cutting the case. I want also the floppy drive sound.

(Just what I want)

Edit: I would add a large lcd screen to show names instead of numbers, but no idea if that's possible.
