I just started working on level 1-3 "rings", testing a new method for map creation. Still a ton of work

I also hope to have more characters for the next version, at least the Mercenary and maybe also the Thug.

I've been trying to get this to work but each time it loads the menu fine, I go into a new game, select character then it just gives me the normal doom maps to choose from. Selecting any of those loads that map and not the Chaos Engine one.

What am I missing?

I've not used zdoom before so any help would be appreciated

Assuming that the pk3, and the doom2.wad files are in your GZDoom directory:

Create a BAT file (create txt file and simply change it's file extension to .bat) with these commands:

@echo off

gzdoom.exe doom2 -file doomsdaymachine.pk3

Then run the bat file.

You can also simply drag&drop the pk3 file to gzdoom.exe.

If you are asked which game to run at the GZDoom startup screen, choose Doom2.

Note that you need the doom2.wad file from somewhere if you don't already own the game, as it is not part of the GZDoom package.

That's the problem then as I was trying to use the ultimate doom wad. Thanks for the help, I'll try the correct WAD now.

Just to say it works flawlessly now and OMG its better than I thought possible. Fantastic effort to date. Playing Chaos Engine in first person with mouse look and wsad controls. puts a massive smile on my face.

Really looking forward to the next update.

What a fantastic idea!

Fantastic idea!

I've not had the urge to replay the game since playing all the way to the end on a real Amiga, but for this I can't wait! - though I will wait, since I won't be able to stop playing once I start and would want to play the whole way through.

Brilliant!

This is a perfect fit indeed. Amazing work.

Would be a pity if it'd stay unfinished. Hope someone else will continue to do the other worlds.

Wow! this is amazing!
Is there any free way to use this without the need to buy doom? Can you use a PD or free wad?

GOG has Doom II + Final Doom for 3.39 USD.

Steam might have it for even less.

You can also use FREEDOOM to replace the resource WADS until you scrouge up the money for Doom and Doom 2 WADS (resource packs):

https://freedoom.github.io/download.html

Just download and unzip the 2 wads into the same directory as both the mod and drag and drop it onto the GZDOOM.EXE. It works great for me even though I own the original Doom Anthology CDROM.

After watching a few YT videos I have added some tips for new users:

Tips for new GZDoom users:
Display Options -> OpenGL Options-> Texture Options -> Texture Filtering Mode: None (shows nice and crisp textures with Dan Malone's awesome pixel art)
Mouse Options -> Always Mouselooks ON (some weapons have no autoaming, like the Preacher's lightning gun. You can't kill small enemies like beetles with them without mouse aiming!)

Here is some gameplay footage:

The Guru Meditation on Youtube has uploaded a very detailed instructional video should you have any trouble getting the game to run.:

Here are some renders, along with their original pixel art counterparts, of the weapons featured in the mod so far:

Cherno, I was wondering if there will be any more development on this? Adding more levels, or tweaking gameplay etc?

Wow, that's amazing indeed. I haven't played the original Chaos Engine for ages, but now I definitely want to play it as well as this map!
