Floppy Drive: A500=A2000?

My A500 floppy drive is dead. Replacements for sale seem nowhere to be found on the net (or I'm looking poorly, which was known to happen too).

I've recently been told however that A2000 floppy drives (which on the contrary /are/ available for sale) were the exact same, or at least totally compatible and would fit just the same in my Amiga.

I'd simply like a confirmation from some EAB members that what I've been told is not total bullshit before I place my order for an Amiga 2000 internal replacement floppy drive. Also, I'd like advice on where to buy it since I've just noticed there's only internal drives for A1200/A600 left on AmigaKit!

(Of course, if you know of a website selling proper A500 floppy drive replacements, that'd be a valuable piece of info as well!)

The original Amiga 2000 drives were, AFAIK the same drive. Usually a Chinon FB-354.

You could remove the extra face plate and the eject button and swap in the A500's eject button and they could be used as a direct replacement.

Ask Amigakit and perhaps the A600/A1200 drives will take the A500's eject button plastic?

What make and model is the existing floppy drive you have? The Sony one's are known to suffer bad SMT capacitors. Have you tried cleaning the heads etc?

The Chinon FB-354 used in the A2000 is almost the same, but the A500/A3000 version of the drive has a little cutout on the top of the metal sleeve that is around the mechanism.

If you have a Chinon in the A500, you can just swap the metal sleeve to go around the A2000 mechanism and you're done. If not, you'll need to do some dremeling in order to be able to fit the A500 cover back on (naturally the front panel of the drive also has to go)

Thank you guys for insightful replies!
Know what? I haven't even thought of checking the model! I mean it is natively part of my machine so it didn't come to mind (although now I realise it should have been obvious from the start) that it really didn't mean all Amiga 500s were always assembled with exactly the same components...

A bit too late for that tonight, but I guess I'll take the time to check that in the next couple days and come back with the results here. Any precision about exactly where on the internal drive I may find its brand and model -- or is it just plain enough that it doesn't need any clue?

Incidentally, yes GadgetUK, I tried cleaning the heads already to no avail...
(Maybe there are other steps I could try though, now that you mention it?)

The make and model of your internal floppy drive should be visible as soon as you remove the top of the case. A label will be attached to the metal sleeve which covers the top of the drive mechanism, and it will give you those details and usually the date of manufacture (month and year) too.

No time for it today though but I'll check and report back here ASAP...
