Apollo 1240 fan inoperative

Attachment 14765

Chaps,
Possible problem, but not sure yet..

Slotted in my new/secondhand Apollo 1240/33 card this evening and expected the onboard fan to start whirring away immediately.

This didn't happen, and still hasn't after an hour of running despite it getting very hot to the touch. I initially thought that some kind of thermostat may be installed, but now think not.

Got the multimeter out (on DCV>20v), but the readings from the board connections show -0.18v?. I expected to see 5v or something along those lines.

So.. are there any further simple tests to conduct? eg. fan, connections etc.

I understand that I could run a fan from the floppy current, but what voltage would this be? 5v?. I've got a little 12v fan, but not sure if that would work.

Many thanks
Magno

Hello there Magno, thats an interesting problem,

As far as i know, the accelerator card only allows for 5v fans, for 12v fans you would require power from a 12v source :/

I would suggest that you either cut or de-solder the fan and connect it to the 12volt rail.

This used to happen to me iirc. Re-seating the card solved the problem. However it proved so troubling that I just removed the fan and soldered on a new one.

Yeah, better fix this Magno. 040s run pretty hot and you're likely to BBQ it if the fan doesn't work

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it?
It's just I am trying to buy one and get a rough idea of what I should pay.

We have some low cost 40mm fans here that may be OK for your Apollo heatsink:

Thanks for the info fellas.

I put the card into another machine and the fan fired up immediately, but the FDD popped and burnt at exactly the same time (just like a french banger). I hope it's a coincidence!

So it went back into my 'best' machine, but no amount of wiggling would get it to run. Possibly worn connections on the MB?

Anyways, it works but I don't trust it. Will get a new fan as Smiley said and hardwire it.

Thanks again
Magno
