sound negative "cpu" percent

Toni,

For several months I reported slowdowns in windowed mode.

I suspect a Winuae CPU regulation issue when another program is running (like Firefox) but most of the time it's okay, so nevermind. It's not systematic... We'll nail it one of those days.

But now the sound is systematically choopy/acting like when CPU is peaking. Except that CPU isn't peaking, game speed seems normal. Even with JIT/fastest emulation on i7 CPU.

I noticed an extra: SND: -30% or something in the status bar.

What can be done?

Try WASAPI sound mode (which does not have the SND% due to way it works). DirectSound hasn't been optimal choice for a long time.

Also it is rarely (if ever today) host CPU speed related but something else slowing down emulation, like forced vsync, too aggressive power saving (either CPU or GPU) etc.

direct sound may be the issue. Which explains why on some configs (quickstart ) sound is ok and on some it is not. Not to mention that I recently upgraded my PC from i5 to i7, and the problem was then amplified.

I'm using "A500/A1200 approx. speed" when running games (through winuae script) but using -10% speed (for the JIT full speed config when I'm on RTG). Since speed % doesn't change, that can also explain the issues.

Thanks, that really helps.

where is the vsync option BTW? I'd hate to have that activated by mistake? (with WASAPI the sound is still not very good: not cracking but stuttering, repeating parts of samples, will make some more tests)

I have a "VRR monitor do not tick!" checkbox. Of course I didn't enable that

That setting is in beta versions only, it doubles the refresh rate on VRR monitors (might be useful with Blank frame insertion once it gets more stable).
VSync is disabled when set to "-". Other options are Lagless and Standard VSyncs.

Toni BTW: I just noticed that VRR option is nearly perfectly stable with CPU set to fastest possible and cycle exact disabled. Also, it would be useful to have that setting separate for Native & RTG modes (not very usable with RTG).

I've made some more tests. The sound is choppy when using "fullwindow". When selecting just "window" or "full screen", the sound is okay again.

I suppose that my gfx card + my CPU can't stand stretching the image to a 1920x1200 screen and the CPU peaks (which I cannot check since status bar isn't shown)... Pity as the display was cool.

Globally it seems that when the machine struggles, the first symptom is choppy/echoed sound. The rest is less noticeable.

May be a crappy audio or video driver, check with LatencyMon tool.

GPU scaling should be almost free. Make sure it is really GPU doing the scaling and not WinUAE using huge resolution internally (for example must be Direct3D mode)

I was using DirectDraw. Switched to Direct 3D 11 and sound issues / slowdowns are gone!

I must have carried this option some of my setups from machine to machine for years and it stuck. Thanks. It probably also speeds up the window resize.
