James Pond 2 CD32 No Music (Winuae)

Hello,

On Christmas day I wanted to play James Pond 2 (CD32),
but I ended playing only 15 minutes because the music
wouldn't play.

I have Winuae 2.1 (or whatever, the most recent one)
and a Bin + Cue files with separate wav sound files
that I load in Daemon (I load the cue file).

The sound files are titled as such:

James Pond 2 - Robocod (1993)(Millennium)(Track 2 of 8)[!]

Luckily the intro video plays rather well.
I think I played this before with an older
version of Winuae and the music was working.
Anyone have clues how to get it to work?

Thanks,

Works fine here. Enable on screen leds and check CD led. If it turns bright green = music is playing, check also usual winuae logs.

I think I had this problem with this game myself, I'll test it out when I get home.

Edit
Just tested with WinUAE 1.6.1 with CD32 settings, mounted the game with Alcohol and it runs perfectly with sound for me.
Actually I don't think I ever played the CD32 version, I was thinking of James Pond 3
Don't wanna rub your nose in it but the music is pretty awesome compaired to the regular version

Are you using the Tosec version? Commodore CD32 & CDTV TOSEC (2009-04-18)

Hello,

been a while because of the holidays.

Happy New Year !!!!

I tried the on-screen Leds and it does show up green.
But I still hear no music, only the in-game sound
(including sound of opening video).

So, assuming the CD Leds means it recognizes and plays
the first audio track (aka Track 2), where and how
can I test why I'm not hearing a sound?.

Yes, the version is Tosec.

EDIT: ok, now I see none of my CD32 titles with audio files play the CD audio. Keep in mind it's because I installed the new Winuae version last week. I can't go back to my old Winuae as it seems desinstalled. Something with the new Winuae is not registering my audio. Help!
I tried many of the DSOUND options and nothing works!

CD Audio has nothing to do with WinUAE sound settings. CD Audio is completely handled by CD drive (hardware or virtual).

Most common problem is wrong SCSI mode, it must be set to SPTI in misc panel. (other modes require audio cable between CD drive and motherboard, virtual CDs usually does not support this anymore)

Attach both winuaelog.txt (remember logging checkbox in misc panel) and winuaebootlog.txt if it still isn't working.

Hello,

The Misc. Panel was already set to SPTI.

The log files report errors, but they're written in french.

I am translating these as "there is a problem with your multimedia peripheral. Make sure it functions properly or contact the fabricant."

The other: "Impossible to execute the specified command on a peripheral that opens automatically. Wait for the preipheral to close and try again."

(???? what are they talking about ?? I use Daemon set as the D drive.)

One tiny possibility: make sure you do not have any open handles to CD32 CD (open windows explorer with CD directory open etc..)

EDIT: does physical audio CD work? (in CD32 built-in CD audio player, just insert any audio CD)

I"m not sure how to get standard cd to play through the emulator.
When I choose CD32 it only opens the ISO directly (EDIT: when I unmount
James Pond II, I get the cd32 opening windows but haven't been able to
trigger the cd player (lost in the interface there)).

But listening to the audio tracks from the Daemon mount through
a music application (windows media) works, so it doesn't seem to
be a Daemon problem. It's just that the new version of Winuae
refuses to make me hear this audio.

I'm not sure I understand correctly "open handles", but I don't have
other audio programs opened when I play Winuae + Daemon.
I don't really use things like audio libraries and whatnot.

Is there supposed to be anything selected in the Hard Drive section?
Nothing is "added" there. I can't open the previous Winuae to know
if I had something configured there. I really just copied and pasted
kickstarts and configurations from the old Winuae folder to the new.

Here is how the Sound Properties are set:

DSOUND: principal audio peripheral

Sound emulation: enabled 100% + automatic switching checked

Volume: 100%
Sound Buffer Size: 7

Settings: Channel Mode: Stereo, Stereo Sep.: 70%, Interpolation: Disabled.

Frequency: 44100, Swap Channel: -, Audio Filter: Emulated (A500)

Drive Sound Emulation: 100% DFO:
A500 (Winuae built-in)

All drivers 4 box checked.

In Output, I see no audio or video codecs selected.
Not sure if that matters.

In Chipset: sound is emulated 100%

I don't think that will give much about any problems.

Thanks,

Talkie

PS: at the intro screen we see "James Pond 3" written on the wall for some reasons. Maybe that's how Kitty got the two titles confused.

Insert real physical audio CD in your physical drive when CD32 boot screen is visible. (or before emulation is started, make sure all virtual drives are empty)

This does not prove anything. There are at least 3 different ways to play audio cd tracks..

Has nothing to do with CD audio. You can even disable sound emulation and audio cds still work.

Dear Toni, thank you for your time.

To complicate matters, one of the audio cd drive plays
through CD32, not the other. But the other is slated as Drive H.
So let's just say: yes the cd audio works for CD32.

Unless.... Unless, if one cd drive won't work, than maybe
the problem is related to why the Daemon drive audio
won't work either.

Wait a minute there...

(10 minutes later)

Ok I seem to have found another problem. My computer
or any program won't recognize any medium in cd drive H.
Darn... This is news as it was full working even 2 weeks ago.
All this says is that Winuae is not at fault for not
recognizing this perticular audio player.

Let's try Daemon again (James Pond II):

Err..... Oh my God!!

It works!!!!

What the ...??

Ok, all I did was checking why my second cd drive wasn't working,
so checked the pilotes for that, tried the update button, tried a few sound applications...

And now James Pond II audio works. How bizarre?

I have to say that the first time I tried the cd drive audio (the one that works), Winuae froze while starting to play the CD (before I heard a single note), and F12 wouldn't even escape Winuae, I had to force-escape through windows, and then the cd audio worked when I restarted Winuae.

Ah well, thanks much Toni, I hope it will stay like this.

Now I just found myself another big problem, but
thankfully not related to this forum.

Cheers,

Hello,

I'm back. I have lost Winuae cd audio again.

It seems to be related to a major sound problem but I can't seem to understand how Winuaw is affected by this.

I had a cd drive that seemed dead. It would eject tray, but did not appear in device manager, and neither in disk manager (in administration tool), though I would still see the drive's letter in hard drive C. Turns out the cd drive didn't even appear in the BIOS. So, I bought a new cd drive. It works very fine, all applications plays the audio EXCEPT Winuae.
Winuae just show the player and plays "as if" it was working, and I do see the green CD audio led, but no sound comes out.

Now, the other strange thing, is that the letter from my dead cd audio drive (set to H) still appear in C, though the drive is completely unexistant in both disk manager (administration tools) and device manager. now I only see my new cd audio drive in the managers and it's fully functioning.

If it wasn't for Winuae, I would never expect any sound problem. Why is Winuae playing the CD silent? I just de-installed and re-installed Winuae 2.01 minutes ago to make sure it wasn't an installation corruption (or to make sure it recognizes my new player).

The Sound configuration panel doesn't show anything that's muted (default unit is Integrated Audio Intel or something like that).

I would really appreciate help because the CD32 not playing cd audio is driving me nuts. It has been playing for a while until I closed my computer (it seems to be sensible to my other dead cd drive, even when it's now gone). Daemon (which I use for James Pond 2) plays the audio in any other application.

Will I ever finish James Pond 2?? I'm at like, Level 5.

Hello,

On this thread here, 2 guys had exactly the same problem that I have:

http://eabmobile.abime.net/showthrea...131#post372131

First one solved this by re-arranging his "mixer settings". Err... What "mixer settings"?? The Sound Properties in Winuae? The Windows Sound Panel?
I use default in Winuae, and I see nothing muted or wrong in my Windows Sound Panel. It would have been great if the original guy said exactly what "settings" he changed.

The second guy said he simply activated SPTI. How do you activate SPTI, or more to the point, how do you exactly DE-activate it?? Not only is SPTI set by default, but you can't deactivate it. You can only select one of the
other options (if that's what meant by "deactivating", you're actually "activating" something else, right?). At any rates, I tried the SPTI + SCSI SCAN and it's not working more.

The Cd player of CD32 show the exact time and number of tracks of the cd audio, but when the first track play, it only marks 0.00 (and it's NOT on Pause, I played around). The leds do show green as if there was sound.

Even if my Winuae cd audio functioned for the last 2 weeks, I guess it wasn't a good thing that I never understood the first time what I did to make it work again. It doesn't sound like it's about tweaking the configuration files because I did very little of that, and mostly was playing with the same just a week ago, and had cd audio.

It only means you have broken drivers or hardware installed. I don't help with generic PC issues, sorry.

You can try latest beta because it uses totally different method to play audio tracks but remember that it is still far from production quality..

I'll look into drivers but I just installed a new cd driver yesterday, fresh bought, fresh install and all.

I accept that it's a pc issue but it's only Winuae who doesn't get the cd audio sound. I thought buying a new cd drive would solve that. Can you imagine I bought a cd driver just to play James Pond 2? I mean, I needed one, but what prompted me to go to the shop yesterday was "darn, the audio doesn't work in James Pond 2 anymore!". I can listen to cd, burn cd, listen to Daemon audio in Windows Media Player, etc. I just can't get the sound through Winuae. What driver is Winuae using?? Can we get that info in the log? I'll post a new log, in case anyone have an idea what drivers I should delete or what:

They are many messages at the end about the impossibility to execute a command on a peripheric that is automatic. They say to wait that the peripheric is closed and retry. Hmmm...

That error message is bogus, I have always seen the same weird message when anything goes wrong

Anyway, try the beta, just to confirm new method works (even if you get jittery sound or something). Old MCI method is now considered obsolete and I don't really bother with it anymore.

Ok, the beta version WORKS!!!! Like a charm!! (no jittering sound noticed yet as I used the same James Pond 2 configuration file as before).

Hardware and drivers problems, huh? ;-)

Ok, now, I hope WinUAE 2.02 gets out soon because it sounds like exactly what I need.

Cheers!!

(I wonder if the Beta will accept my saves states...)

PS: I insist that the Beta is different, because I had de-installed and fresh-installed a couple of the recent WinUAE all with the same results (no cd audio since I closed my computer last week). Now everything is back to normal.

Yes. Beta uses completely totally really very different way of playing audio tracks. Old used ancient MCI API that works like "play track 1, please" and then something happened somewhere, beta is basically audio CD ripper that reads the raw audio data sectors from CD and plays it using standard audio API.

1-2 months at least..

Old state files should "always" work (if there are no stupid bugs)
