I could clock Outzone on one credit.

Hate to think how many credits I wasted learning how to clock it however.

IMO, The original Shionbi is one of the most perfectly packaged arcade games ever. It's easy to pick up, it has decent graphics, good sound, it has a very balanced learning curve, it feels fair to the player, its nicely portioned into stages, missions and the bonus stages for variation, its just the right length (overall), and it's definitely beatable with one coin, but it takes time to get that good. And even after you beat it, it has replay value as there are bonuses for remaining time, not using ninja magic and clearing bonus levels.
Not perfect, but damn close, in my opinion.
I have to agree here. I have sooooo many old favourite arcade games but if I was to pick the absolute best then it would have to be Shinobi

1942, after a lot of practicing I could complete it with 1 credit.
Takes about 1 hour to complete, and is pretty exhausting to play for so long.

Thanks to manipulating the arcade machine with an electric lighter, I managed to complete Xevious without paying for any credits at all.

Used to 'borrow' the electric starters out of the oil heaters at school to do the same thing.

When I was at school back in the 80's I used to finish this games with one credit (one live)

Shinobi
Street Fighter 1
Double Dragon.

I have the Double Dragon Jamma PCB that I still play regularly at home with the Supergun adapter, Neo Geo Controllers and the Framemeister

The other games I just use MAME, but nothing replaces those times where there were real socializing at the arcades

None. All of them were insanely hard, even in Mame and easy setting it's impossible to finish. But I can go really far in these

Toki
Pang
Bubble bobble
Wonderboy in monsterland

I could have finished more games but as I was almost always with friends in arcade places, most of the times we lost lives just because we were speaking/joking *

Arcade halls were good extra socialisation places .

So, did finish :
- Out Run (all races) (so 1 credit each race )
- Hang On
- Dragon's Lair
- Wonderboy
- Shinobi

And failed close/not far from end :
- Wonderboy in Monsterland
- Gradius
- Parodius
- R-Type
- Robocop
- Strider
- Altered Beast
- Golden Axe
- Rygar
- Ghost'n Goblins
- Jackal
- Karate Champ (like "Frank Dux" & "Ray Jackson" [ Show youtube player ] ) I don't remember if this game has really an end...

*Edit: I must say that sometimes we were speaking on purpose . Ahhh, what a good time !

Yeah, the 4th stage in Strider is pretty hardcore and usually where I struggle / fall apart. Those jumps over the moving spikes when subject to reverse gravity suck big time

Am surprised you've never finished Golden Axe in one credit though.

I don't remember in which level it was, but yes , pretty hard* until you get the pattern to place the character. If I remember correctly, this gravity stuff is present twice in the game. Nevertheless, I reached the final stage but never the final boss... .

I remember the game as quite difficult (maybe was set to hard by the arcade hall owner). Or maybe I was just no good .

*1: I have seen that you also enjoyed Shinobi. Don't you think the "turning Buddha" boss part was one of the hardest part of the game ? (usually if I managed not to be pushed on the laser, I managed to finish the game)

*2: speaking about hard game, I would mention "Blood Money". In my opinion, this game cannot be fulfilled without a trainer.

These in the arcade that I can remember:

Cliff Hanger
720 Degrees
Bad Dudes vs Dragonninja (with a buddy playing 2 players)
Elbow, ahem, Double Dragon
Golden Axe
Hyper Sports (or at least I'm pretty certain this actually ended after so many times through all the events)

This thread makes me feel old

I pretty much lost interest in arcades when games started to come out that were just designed to keep you pumping in more coins with "Continue ?". There was the rare exception such as Tron that could be set up for continues but mostly during my time in the arcades such games didn't exist. And for the most part games with endings didn't either, although there were plenty that just naturally ended things like "The Pit". Try getting past more than a few levels in that sucker!

Pretty much all the arcade get togethers I've ever been to, the use of continues is banned. Kind of a gentleman's agreement. Haven't been part of the scene for a few years now though so haven't been to any meets in ages.

"Continue ?" = the first case of "Pay to Win". It spoils things now just as it did then.

You've probably seen this thread but just in case you haven't: Shinobi Boss Level 5

...the Buddhas; you always die once when first attempting this boss. Afterwards it's a little easier for some reason.

Shinobi is my favourite arcade game of all time

I can finish it with these dipswitches set:

a) Difficulty = Hardest
b) Enemy's Bullet Speed = Fast

Always, no. It's possible to kill the boss without loosing a single life.
Anyway, it happened, even if I was able to finish the game that sometimes I lost ALL my lives here .

I don't know which were the settings in the arcade hall where I played it back in 1987... but with these settings you deserve the name of "Iga no mono" .

I've never been able to; no matter when you time your ninja magic through the wall. Also never in seen anyone do it.

Most arcades would have been both:

a) Difficulty = Easy or Normal
b) Enemy's Bullet Speed = Slow
