Thanks for the info SquawkBox

Anyway i actually don't know if i setup mame emulator since i found that roms set is nearly 64 GB

I'm not going to download it

Instead i moved also towards handheld emulation

Just tried Game Gear and Game Boy Advance emulation .... nice

Now the total number of systems emulated is increased to 10

You don't need the latest romset to enjoy MAME, also you were probably looking at non-merged one.

Some older, merged-sets weight much less and you will still get ~90% of games working fine. Check out 0.78 for example (Retropie set), it should be ~ 15 GB (you can trim it even further if you get rid of mahjong, etc games).

15 GB are still too much

Indeed i used to download from archive.org and there the download speed is really low

Probably for me it's convenient to download the single rom, just to try

Anyway i much more prefer home computer and consoles systems than arcade machines

Not really emulation, but currently trying to get Samurai Shodown Sen to work (Taito X hardware running on WinXP embedded). It worked on Win7, but not 10 anymore. WINE on Linux however displays the boot screen, before the screen goes black.

@chip
planetemu.net has arcade roms and some CHD ( HD images) with decent speed. Not the latest version (0.220), but it should work for most games. MAME is a beast and there are a tons of amazing and unique games that never got a port.

MasterStiller, one of your fellow countryman offers on his forum an unofficial MAME version based on a partial romset. Let us know when you will be done freeing up about 20 GB of HDD space, and I'll provide you with a link to his forum. As a side note, his set is not compatible with ClrMamePro (a tool to check integrity and completeness of rom sets), also, the download links are monetized which means you might have to deal with a few popups (adf.ly "transitional" links).
Also, you might want to know that with such partial romsets, you won't have access to chd based games such as Street Fighter III ~ Third Strike or Area 51 (a Virtua Cop like). Quite a few MAME fans skip these anyway since put together, they tend to weight a lot. There are many frontends out there for better management of MAME, Laser Discs etc. games and assets. Personally, I have been using Emu Loader for years (not the most polished or impressive GUI admittedly).

Thanks for the offer, but i really don't know if i want another rom set

Indeed for MAME i could simply try the roms one by one

So, the only advise i need is the right emulator to use

How many exist ?

It doesn't work that way, each and every rom ought to belong to the same romset. If you download a game here, a game there, you can easily mess up things. Among these many, many games from a same MAME romset, it's up to you to increment a favorites list. The MAME emulator included with MasterStiller version is Mame Plus! (MAME Plus nonag-dinput-cave). On archive.org's Internet Arcade, you can play many arcade games directly from your browser :
https://archive.org/details/internetarcade

Quote:
The Internet Arcade is a web-based library of arcade (coin-operated) video games from the 1970s through to the 1990s, emulated in JSMAME, part of the JSMESS software package.
If you don't like the romset approach, you can play a few Capcom, Midway, Atari classics through compilations made for the 6th gen consoles. If you don't own any of these consoles, PS2 and Gamecube emulation on the PC is quite mature.

Cool, but you can have many of these systems centralized in Final Burn Alpha / Neo project, a follow up to MESS of sorts.

Added also BBC, MSX and X68000

Now i have a total of 15 systems and 13 different emulators

The number of emulator is less than actual systems since one emulator emulate 3 different systems (Fusion emulate Mega Drive, Master System and Game Gear)

What game(s) could be worth playing on the BBC ? Why not attempting to also emulate Apple II or Archimedes for additional systems, while we're at it ?

You are missing NeoGeo and NeoGeo CD, as that requires its separation from arcade. Back in time I loved NeoRageX emulator because it was working @ full speed on even Pentium II @ 350MHz.
