Weird brief screen glitches on boot

Hello.

My A1200 has suddenly started displaying a fullscreen freakout for a second when booting to workbench. Once I'm in it's fine - but if I launch the Pointer preference app, it does it for a couple of seconds and then the whole display goes black.

What's going on? Is it some freaky screenmode change? I haven't changed anything obvious, so there's nothing obvious to change back!

It also freaks out and goes black if I run Deluxe Paint III. Games are fine.
