It's interesting how the Amiga demo differs to the ST demo, some of the graphics are different, the ST version even includes flickering torches in places, example attached of the thief's lair / teleport room and that elusive gold bag..

Thanks for the hint! I'll try and will add it to my remake

I think it's impossible to get the bag of gold. It happens sometimes in the original game (ex: level 3): there's a thief and 1 money item + important item, and the theif prefers the important item.

Quite possibly its just a red herring to drive people bonkers; game designers of those days are not to be trusted

looks really great now !!! j-f, could you add an option to use filters ??
I think about bilinear and 5xbr, i think that together they are the best solution for the moment.
is it normal that i have no music during the intro ?
I can't believe that it was 8 years ago when you launched this !!!

monster A.I. could make him drop the item and pick another one. Well, that if the setting is applied, but rarely is as it's dangerous

about filters: I'll stick to scale2x ATM. Working on a 2x windowed version using scale2x. Eats a lot of CPU...
no music during intro: you have to put the MP3 files in "music" subdir for that.
8 years already!! but a long time without changing anything. Did not work seriously on the game since 2012.

As for that thief with the bag of gold that you can't get in the demo - perhaps the bitmaps put it there to just reinforce the idea that he was a thief and stole stuff, as a sort of game detail. No way of getting it though.

I have a vague memory that this game may have been showed on the ITV Motormouth/Get Fresh show at some point with the dev team showing their map editor and how they placed objects and a few monsters, but I can't be for certain and it could have been some other game, would need to watch every episode to confirm and they aren't available online.. memories eh.

You're certainly right. Also happens in level 3 when the thief brings some key. Well it's not like they're real, they can put some stuff everywhere and it's the same price for them

If you find any footage about the Bros I'm interested. I already watched Chaos Engine promotional video where you see the version with 3 characters. Cool!

Been playing the new version a bit, and found some issues:

The 4 AM mix begins at world 2, and you start out fully loaded with weapons. You can also just jump down the ladder and approach the door to get the "World 1 completed" message.

That repeating whistling sound I've mentioned a hundred times, it's still there

I downloaded and added the full music pack, and I get music at the title screen and when I see the shop-keeper, but the intro is still silent.

About whistling sound: OK, is it repeating or just playing when landing?
I think I just forgot the intro music module in the package, hence the silence when starting the game. will fix that!

Is the wall monster slghtly too high in the 4am mix treasure room so that the fire doesn't touch the hero?

Thanks for the patch, and yes, that whistling sound doesn't actually repeat, it only plays randomly after falling and landing.

Hey jotd,

Regarding the level editor, seems I'm getting a Java exeption error in the latest version (0.8 C) when trying to create a new level, but it works fine in the previous release still. Any ideas? I'm using Win 7 x64 + JRE 8u60 if it helps.

Can't reproduce the bug. I assume that's because "mp3" subdir is empty/strange, but that shouldn't happen the way the code is done.
Can you tell me what's in your "mp3" subdir?

Ye jotd you solved it, I had just extracted the 0.8 C version into a new folder and it does not include the music mp3\mod subfolders, this causes the crash when trying to create a new level. I copied the mp3\mod folders over from 0.8 B and it's fine. Panic over :-)

New version 0.8-D is available.

Mostly bugfixes/adjustments (but A LOT of them) & JOTD level fixes so it is playable. Also added a walkthrough for both classic & JOTD levels.
