If it is a sideways scroller, it could be Midnight Resistance.

No but that Midnight is along the right track. It was a vertical scoller if anything, and you looked from above just like on chaos engine. I repeat myself :P

I was thinking that before but didn't post it in the end... as it's not really similar to Chaos Engine

There was a game with very similar graphics and gameplay to The Chaos Engine called Alien Bash II, but i dont think it was 2 player.. Check out the screens.

Maybe something like Cabal or Operation Thunderbolt ?
I've still another game in my mind that also existed on C64, if I'm right, but I'm still struggling for this game's name...

Well that mistake won't happen, my retro gaming history has strictly been C64, Amiga 500 and NES.

I have a photographic + situational memory :] I remember what the disk looked like, just not the name, though keywords Machine + Man come into my mind.
