This one is easy to answer as I just revisited some of these very games.

Wizball - Seriously....WTF
Terrorpods - See above.

These days thanks to YouTube you can look these things up I guess, but that kind of spoils the fun

Wizball is simple enough (although the controls take a LOT of getting used to). Buy the 'cat' and then collect as much paint as you can.

Terrorpods was my choice for this thread too. I could never even begin to understand it, and interestingly, no-one on this thread seems willing/able to explain it to us, either!

So i just went around nuking planets. when i got sick of the pretty colours of "destroy planet activated" i just loaded the game to listen to J. Michel Jarre's title track.
Agreed. Captain Blood was one of the few games where I owned the original, still didn't understand what to do.

Thinking back further, Caverns of Khafka for the C64. I'm imagining the developer(s) brainstorming, when the already ridiculously small budget was spent; "let the player work out the bugs and misspell 'Kafka' somewhere in the title".

The fact that your sentence means NOTHING to me, perhaps expands on my lack of knowledge with this game lol.

Cat?

Paint?

WHAT?

Me and my brother loved playing Alcatraz in coop mode. However, we never knew that the equipped weapon could be switched by getting into cover, so one player picked up the machinegun and the other hand grenades only to kill the few instances where you encounter the prone flamethrower enemies that were impossible to circumnavigate without losing a life

I struggled with Prince of Persia. It was either the game or my crappy joystick that made it difficult. Couldn't get much past the bit where you jump through a mirror and your reflection runs off the other direction.

Yes. Flashback was rather frustrating, which is a shame because it was such a pretty game. I was able to get farther in Blackthorne, a similar action platform title.

Then it wasn't the joystick, because then you were already several levels into the game and passed some really harrowing time restricted jump sections in level 3

But it was a difficult game in general, requiring really good memory and timing. It took me years to progress all the way to the end. I didn't even do it on the Amiga, I eventually finished it on the PC. Don't get me started on Prince of Persia 2, that game just hates me.

Soccer Kid

I thought I just had to get to the end of each level and beat bosses to win the game.

Wrong. You have to collect all the peices of the world cup along the way too.

Cheers mate. It is a case of RTFM I guess. But was funny back in the day.

"We have weapons......the idea must be to shoot EVERYTHING!"

Can't think why I kept killing left mouse button.

Captain Blood for me to.
Was playing on C64, and never figured out where should I click with the hand, so I can see something (meaningful) is happen.
Same could be said on my first try on Elite on C64. Fortunately, my friend showed me everything I need to know, and after that, I spent months playing.

The Exile (again, C64), was very strange to me, and I couldn't figure out at the start what should I do (I had cracked version). However, the amazing game physics kept me trying, and trying, and finally, I figured out what all those strange symbols on the bottom of the screen do. Never finished it, but got pretty far.

Time Machine...

That silly square grid map above. I'm sure it means something but it confused me as a kid.

Narco Police. Wandering around in caves shooting the guys was fun until you run out of ammo and there's seemingly no way out.

Like earlier in this thread, mainly Gravity comes to mind and Warhead (but I got a Dox with keys for that) a bit as well. Games that looked awesome and demanded to be played, but without a manual (you can guess how I obtained the games ) and with still "developing English language skills" I never really got going with them. Time for a second chance I guess
