Amiga battery - replace or remove
I need advice. I have Amiga 2000 and Amiga 500. Both computer have a battery (A500 in trapdoor memory expansion). I thinking about cutoff battery to prevent some serious damage on motherboard. Now battery looks good and works but i do not care about time and date.
My question is did i can simply cutoff or desolder battery and use my amiga without it, or i need to replace with new one? If i understand good, battery is only used for saving time and date and nothing more? |

Yes, it's just for keeping time and safest to remove before any leakage occurs. You can put in a lithium coin cell instead (or a NiMH cell mounted in a film canister far away from the motherboard) if you wish.

Cut off battery. I did that before it leaked. You can then easily remove the residual pins if you want with soldering iron and tweezers.

I use super caps in many of my machines. Works nice and keeps the charge for weeks.
