Question Can anyone identify this game?

Hi,

I got this one from Twists MIA list.
It's named
Buck Rogers (19xx)[cr BS1-TKT].zip

which is, in my opinion, not correct.

It's very unlikely that SEGA really released Buck Rogers - Planet Of Zoom on the Amiga.
And if they did, it's also very unlikely that they would have changed the entire gameplay in the Amiga version!
Please look here.

Buck Rogers - Planet Of Zoom is more a SKILL game than a mere shoot'em up. Here, you have to fly very accurately between two ... well, let's call them beacons. Otherwise you crash against the beacons and lose a life.
On this strange Amiga game, there ARE NO BEACONS!

So it's again very unlikely that this is really Buck Rogers - Planet Of Zoom.

I think that with this strong community we'll eventually solve this enigma as well.
BTW: This "version" crashes to AmigaDOS after level 12. Freeze and ADF are in the zone.

@Galahad/@Codetapper: Could you please try to remove the "permanent trainer" from the game?
We might get into a kind of GAME OVER screen then and maybe into the title!

Thanks everybody in advance.

This seems to be a self-contructed adf ! The adf is labeled BLANK and most of the drawers seem to be lead nowhere .... maybe a PD game put onto a Disk ?

Actually that file originally appeared (as far as I know) one-parted on compacts, so the disk part is irrelevant.

On the TOSEC disk, the game is not one-parted.
Each file is separately listed in the buckdata/ folder.
This disk really has a problem, by the way. Lots of references to illegal header keys that can't even be fixed by DiskSalv.

Weird. I guess I never looked at the disk contents of that version. The one(s) I always had from the old days (at least I *think*) were one-parted. Good thread, Andreas. This unusual game is one that we really need to know the story on.

Post Bad news about the trainer

This game does not have infinite lives - I played it and the lives were ticking down until I had none left. But then it just jumps back to starting a new game automatically. Hence there doesn't seem to be any place to remove the trainer.

I think I remember this game on my C64, although you had to continually fly between a couple of posts rather than just shooting stuff. Perhaps a search on a site like Lemon64 might help?

Yay ... these "posts" as you call them is what I call "beacons".
That's the "real" Buck Rogers by Sega Electronics, 1983.

This oh-so called "Real" Buck Rogers is actuall from Sega, it was first released on arcades in 1982 , tately it was converted for many systems (most versions done by US Gold, the MSX one done by Sega itself (And it's by far the best home version I ever played )

In this game you had to go through posts, and after passing through a certain number of posts, you would go to the space, and you will have to destroy a certain numbers of ships on space, then face a boss, and then get back to ground, to do everything again, but in a harder level. You could also shoot backwards, what was very weird

This "planet of zoom" subtitle, I think it was added only in the home versions, but I can be wrong.

I almost get the feeling the Amiga version is just a WIP beta that never was finished, hence the omission of the beacons. Can players of the various other versions verify the rest of the game minus the skill part with the beacons?

here ya go...

"Planet Of Zoom" was also readable on the title of the IBM PC version.

@ Twistin

Thx for the info !

Mission Andromeda seems to be the VERY SAME game.

For me it's hard to believe Sega would convert such an ancient game for the Amiga.

Maybe this Buck Rogers game is somehow Mission Andromeda hacke, not showing the title screen or something.

Yeah, that's possible. One can never trust what a game name is called on a disk when there is no title screen.

Definitely.
1 : 1.
Same sprites, same color blendings, same colors.
Provided that the others agree also, you can finally consider this enigma solved and remove the "Buck Rogers from SEGA" () request from the MIA list. The last decision lies upon you, though.

This sounds so plausible that it must be true.

I remember the same on the C64: there's a game called Jet Pac on http://cia.c64.org. That's nothing else but BAC PAC starting at a different address, skipping the intro screen!!
Yeah. But now I'm gonna stop that stupid off-topic talk again.

Over a decade of believing this folklore from some wannabe with an Amiga Action Replay I and it can finally be put to rest due to Andreas' persistence and Walker's photographic memory. EAB is (indeed) the place to be!
