Nintendo gets redress

The owners of the LoveROMs and LoveRETRO sites, which offered old Nintendo games, agreed to pay 12 million francs to the Japanese giant. This Arizona-based couple acknowledged the illegality of the retro video games they distributed via their platforms. It seems that Nintendo wanted to make an example to dissuade other initiatives of this kind. The final invoice should be much lower.

I would also not provoke Sony much. They already proven they can be very protective to their rights (mostly in music business) and they own Psygnosis portfolio. Recently they released a new SotB and could act similarly to Nintendo.

@Preseda: I'll take the risk:

"Hey Sony: you suck, I have copied a lot of your games"

See?

I didn't know the ROMz site business was so lucrative you could afford to spare 5 million € or whatever the current price of the Swiss franc is.

OK, come on guys.

Realistically this is a possibility, however unlikely it is, it's still a risk factor, so no point in provoking a reaction.

We all know how big Sony likes to be and how they like to flex their muscles, so I'd rather EAB be on their insignificant list and bypass us without so much of a look.

Isn't it possible for any product to become "not commercially viable"?

Nintendo will no longer bother those who broadcast its games

VIDEO GAMES The Japanese firm has relaxed its copyright rules for video makers active on Twitch and YouTube.

Nintendo cuts himself some slack in the use of the content from its successful games in videos.

Its new guidelines have lifted most of the existing restrictions and no longer require registration in its advertising revenue sharing system.

"As long as you comply with certain basic rules, we will not object to your use of gameplay sequences and/or screenshots of games for which Nintendo holds the "copyright"," the Japanese publisher said. "Big N" simply justi?é this political turnaround by saying they were "disarmed by the loyalty of their fans".

"Video makers had become reluctant to release Nintendo content because of Nintendo's extreme rigidity on copyright, unlike Microsoft and Sony. Some reported that they had been sued for posting game excerpts on Twitch or YouTube.

This announcement by the Japanese firm comes a week before the expected release of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate".

"Nintendo has a fan base that has been dying to do things for years," commented Ellen Rose, an expert for the Outside Xtra website, interviewed by the BBC. -LAF

picture's legend: Fans are looking forward to the release of the next installment of "Super Smash Bros."

Maybe they realised that, even if they are big N, if everybody is speaking about others company's games, it's hard to stay under the spotlights...

Fortunately they have a communication agency that manages to find them formulations like the one in the article: "disarmed by the loyalty of their fans" !

There were some very promising fan remakes of popular titles that I wished Nintendo had not shut down.

Nintendo recognize the money there is to be made in retro gaming right now, and they want a slice of the pie.

The only way that is plausible is to limit the un-official avenues.

At least they are doing retro gaming well, unlike Sony.

They've even flipped the bird to Ferrari and produced a classic arcade version of Outrun, changing the Testarossa just enough as to not need a licence.

Lack of Ferrari licence is why all versions of Outrun have disappeared from all app stores a few years back.

I guess you could argue that's a Sega initiative actually, given Outrun is a Sega title, but it was produced for the Switch so......meh.

Nintendo does retro games well, really?! GBA version of Donkey Kong doesn't even have all the levels, there are only meant to be 4 and they couldn't even be bothered doing that many.
