Post EGS 24/28 Spectrum Probs!

Hi Everyone

I have an A1200T/Apollo 040/64mb/EGS 28/24 Spectrum Graphics Board/OS 3.9 all runnung on a Hewlett Packard HP72 CRT Monitor

Now when i put everything together and fired up the system i noticed that i get weird Diagonal lines going across my Workbench,colours are non existant except for a bluish grey colour and a greenish colour in some of the icons. I`ve checked the system over 3 times now! please bare in mind that i`m running my system on a One Monitor System so i have a pass thru cable between the RGB Port & EGS IN and the monitor cable goes to the EGS out port,but i can`t find where the problem is so i`m asking for anyone`s help.

The other problem i have is not knowing what Monitor file to add to my Devs folder! i`ve tried DBLPal but all i get with that after a reset is " Out Of Range" 48kHz HSync 60Hz or 72Hz Vsync (Can`t Remember which) from the monitor display the only one that does seem to work is VGA Only but that doesn`t solve my display problem. I hope you nice guys can help me out with my little problems and thankyou in advance to all your future efforts.

Hope someone can Help as this problem is making me want to

Misha

Hello there,

Welcome to the EAB, theres plenty of mischief to get up to around here.

now I am unsure of OS3.9, but I have seen a similar problem solved under OS3.1/3.5

If i am not mistaken some screen modes are not passed through correctly and hence there are problems, similar to your description.

Try putting a regular PAL or NTSC monitor driver to see if this cures the pass-through problem.

I do hope you get this sorted, let us know how you get on.

@Zetr0

Thanks for the welcome! i`ve tried that and that doesn`t seem to help either
infact you know when you have a broken monitor lead it only displays 2 of the 3 colours well that`s what it seems like but i know this isn`t the case since it works fine on a PC.

I`ve been wondering if the problem is with the scandoubler (internal) or if i require a flicker fixer. Thanks Zet0 for your help will give the NTSC one a go later to see if that helps,will keep you posted to how things go but if not i fear it may be an internal problem.

Misha

BTW Nice to see so many people still supporting the Amiga

@ Zetr0

Hi tried out NTSC last night and it`s still the same problem,me thinks it`s an
internal problem with a piece of hardware. Going to strip Miggy down and do tests minus most of the hardware until i can find the problem.

Many Thanks anyway

first of all, what kind of monitor you have ? It seems you have a VGA monitor but it's better to make sure. A 1084-1085 won't handle your scandoubled modes.

48kHz HSync 60Hz or 72Hz Vsync you get means you have a scandoubler which doubles the already doubled DBLPAL mode. You shouldn't use DBL modes with a scandoubler.

Also, spectrum has a strange 9 pin passthrough port. Passthrough cable might be incorrectly done, giving problems.

What you should do is try to get image directly from your amiga, through rgb port to your screen (no scandoubler). Try multiscan and DBLNTSC modes. If they're working, connect the monitor to scandoubler (no spectrum). Try NTSC and PAL modes (PAL might be problematic depending how your monitor handles 50 KHz HSync). If you get NTSC working then you know your scandoubler is working. Then route your scandoubler output to spectrum passthrough port (9 pin) and connect your monitor to spectrum VGA port. You should have the same image with the same screenmode. If not, either your passthrough cable or passthrough port is faulty.

By the way, to use Spectrum rtg modes, you need to install either picasso96 or cybergraphx.

@Coze & @Zetr0

Don`t know if i`ve done the right thing but i only installed Picasso96 and
didn`t bother with the Spectrum software or drivers. i set PicassoMode to
640x480 and have my Workbench screen @ 800x600 16bit PC,i`m sure for
games i`m going to have to drop the screen size and down to 8bit for them
to work.

Is it possible to register Picasso96 and is there an update? i do have another
question...i`m trying to install AmiSYS on my Amiga but i`m having a problem
following the instructions on the homepage as to me they don`t seem to
clear (either that or i`m thick )if anyone knows how it`s done could you
please let me know.

hey, I'm glad that it worked enjoy your amiga !

you've done the right thing. spectrum software sucks ***. you don't need it, just use picasso96. You don't have to worry about games, they open up their own screens without asking you (from your native amiga output) good thing is that they're routed through your passthrough cable so you can just see them on your screen without any extra configuration.

Question

@Coze

You say that about games but when i load up a game it defaults back to Amiga screen rather than the spectrum screen and that is still displaying
only two colours,like you said i`m either doing something wrong or the scan
doubler isn`t working. what`s the alternative to the scan doubler? flickerfixer?
or would i be better buying a rgb to vga connector and using amiga rgb port
rather than the scan doubler

Sorry i know i have alot of questions

naah, ok now you either have a problem with your scandoubler or spectrum passthrough. I'ld say it's the spectrum passthrough cable though to make sure, open up a game and connect your monitor to scandoubler output. if you have full colors, it's the passthrough cable. if you have two colors again, it's the scandoubler.

a flickerfixer is basicly a scandoubler which can also do interlaced screens. It doesn't have any relation to your problem, your scandoubler is most probably also a flicker fixer (if you can post some pics of your setup, we could make sure and zetro would cheer with joy as he's a big fan of hardware pron )

@coze

Will post some pics of my hardware setup in the next few days (been a little busy @ work ) i`ve ordered an Amiga RGB 2 VGA Adapter to solve my
problem because i think it`s the scandoubler that`s faulty and i want to be
able to enjoy playing all the old games i used to play,can`t do that with only
two colours .

My next project is going to be to Tower my A600! currently on the lookout for
a Accelerator card for it,will add clockport,accelerator card,3.5 hardrive,a decent tower. Can you think of anything else that i could add to it that`s available and doesn`t require trawling ebay for i know yourself and
Zetr0 was talking about it in the summer last year to a guy that had done his
just can`t find the thread.

Thankyou anyways for all your help and will add pics so you can see exactly
how it`s setup (just incase something is wrong).
