hardrive problem

I have a pc hardrive attached to an amiga 1200. i preped it ready to format and then installed 3.0 into the system directory, that all worked but for some reason the the main directory called work shows as 100% full and theres no files in it and i cant seem to do anything with it? I'm at a total loss! Is this maybe something to do with it being a pc hardrive. the hardrive size is about 20 gig but the total used, which i didnt seem to have a choice in is 4 gig. i can write to the ststem directory just fine but thats only a small amount of space.

To avoid that problem, you must keep your partitions to 2GB or less within that first 4GB area of the hard drive you are using.

fed up of that false info prowler really you should know better by now

keep all your partions under 4gig for the moment

it is worth keeping your partions under 2 gig if you are using fastfile system becuase of the disk validation needing lots of memory but its not a must, biggest file size you can have on fastfile system is 2gig

@Cosmicfrog: partitions can't go over 2Gb each, when using FFS from 2.0 to 3.1 ROM/Workbench. PERIOD!

Also all partitions must be in the first 4Gb on 3.1 ROM/Workbench. SCSI device from this ROMs is the culprit in this case.

Workbench 3.5/3.9 is a totally different matter!

I`ll try it again to make sure, I`ve know to be wrong but in this case I don`t think so

just as I thought

rkauer you need to prove it to your self that you can creat partions up to 4 gig with kicstart 3.0 and wb 3.1 as that is what I just had to hand to prove it to myself that it works and it dose just created a 3.5 gig partion

however partions this big is not recomended perhase this is what is confusing you ?

This is complete nonsense. PERIOD!

There is no partition size limit in FFS from 2.0 to 3.1. There is a 4GB hard drive limit. And there is a limit created by the amount of available RAM. If you have not enough RAM you cannot format (or rather validate) partitions of a certain size.

Other than that there is nothing which hinders you to create one large partition which covers the entire drive (which may not be larger than 4GB).

One reason to keep partitions smaller than 2GB is that many program use signed intergers to calculate free space and see everything above 2GB as negative. But this is only a problem if the 4GB partition has more than 50% free space.

Another reason for smaller partitions is handling. If you get a file system error, it's easier to fix it if the partition is smaller and (even more important) if you have another partition with enough space to backup all files.

thank you thomas

It really annoys me that so many ppl say 2gig is the biggest partion you can have with FFS

so penfold_t_mole, Matt020 are you any the wiser now ?

Cheers guys. I think i know what i need to do now. The only thing i'm thinking now is i dont seem to remember having a choice when it came to partition size. Not to worry. i'll have a mess about with tomorrow. While im here can i pick your brains about something else... How do you setup re-lo-kick or program selector on your hardrive?
