I think Strider on CPC was perfectly awful.

have you heard the amstrad cpc os symbos ? it's awesome. you need a beefed up cpc to run it though, but considering it's capabilities, it's quite understandable.

Hehe, that Symbos looks rather cool

Anyone else got anything to add before this thread properly dies?

Being a CPC owner back in the day (and still now) I'm probably kinda biased to it a bit - I've always enjoyed the CPC and quality it stood for. Every game I've ever played on the CPC just shouts out quality. However, annoyingly, other retro gamers tend to slate the CPC for no real reason. The only thing wrong with the CPC I can see is it was released too late onto the 8-bit scene. Atari STs and Amigas were just around the corner (if not already available) and therefore the CPC stood little chance to shine.

From what literature I've read and from what I've heard/seen on other forums etc. the Amstrad CPC was very popular in European territories - mostly in France (iirc). The Amstrad CPC was my first taste of computing and hence holds a special place in my nostalgic memories along with the Amiga.

Some more perfect games:

Head Over Heels (CPC=Best 8-bit version)
Batman (The 3D version made by Jon Ritman - same person who made HoH)
Jack Nicklaus Greates 18 Hole of Golf (The perfect golf game - actually it's also available on the Amiga as well)
Arkanoid (I love the CPC version)

... I can't think of anything else (at the moment) but there's plenty of decent games to be played on the CPC

- Chase HQ (miles better in CPC than most versions (inc Amiga and ST))
-Target Renegade.
- Renegade
- Robocop
- Rainbow Islands

Although the CPC was not the ultimate games computer, it had some excellent games. Where it lacked was the sound (and the crappy speaker in the keyboard).

I am very nostalgic of the Amstrad CPC which was my 2nd computer (the 464 with green monitor) after the Oric Atmos (great one too).
Some other good links for fans : http://www.amstrad.es/ (spanish) , http://www.phenixinformatique.com/ (best french forum) and http://cpcrulez.free.fr/ (french).

The C64 version was AWFUL to look at so competition-wise it didn't have much to go up against.

But the colours on the CPC version sure do look swanky!

I never owned a CPC nor have I used one. I started this thread to generate interest. Go and troll somewhere else.

I owned CPC 464 or 6128 for short time. For me it was something far better than my Atari 130XE, like 16-bit machine, but I was only little kid at that time. I don't remember what happen with my Amstrad :/ No one from my family either, but they can still mistake Atari with Amiga, for them it's only "game machine".

Atari, hahaha. Speccy and C64 were best 8-bit machines for gaming

This shows only, that you never played XL games. Play some emulated games, this machine was far better than this Spectrum & CPC crap for scrolling games.

Know only one guy, who got a CPC. He wanted a C-64, like all others. His parents bought him a CPC, they thought it was the "right" machine.

c64 best game machine ? mmhhh it has SOME good hardware parts. like
the Sid and hardware scrolls. But it has a basic which is rubbish aside amstrad cpc one, and horrible colors ! My god ! how did they dare ?

And if i have some good hints to give you, some CPC coders went ahead of what the CPC is capable of.

Try Xyphoes Fantasy by silmarils, and you will see what the machine can do :

Full overscan screen, 50 fps per sec, mode 0 with split screen for much more colors, a whole lot of sprite on screen (it NEVER slowdown !) and a very good playability. I don't even speak of the music which coming from an atari ST since the CPC and ST use the same sound processor (ay-31XX for CPC and his clone YM2149 on the ST).

also, have a look on spanish games like Astro Marine corps, after the war.

These two ones are the state of the art graphically speaking, and are excellent on a technical point of view, the c64 is way way behind.....

Same for stormlord I and II, cybernoid, cybernoid II, zapt the balls, prehistorik 2, trantor, turrican (which is better than the c64 version graphically speaking, since the game lacks sound....), turrican 2 kill litterally the c64 version, excellent graphics, awesome sequence, huge levels, and the biggest game ever made for a CPC, since the game code is 4000kb and crunched 715kb on both side of the disk.

I think the CPC has been pushed far far beyond its limits.... which is not the case for the c64. I have tried the machine since i never owned one, and i have been very disappointed by the games quality......

My good french friend, too much alcohol today?

Turrican 2 is better on the CPC? Baaah, what a crap port.

btw: All the spanish games like Astro Marine Corps, Game Over etc sucks. Boring and unplayable stuff.

i have tried turrican i and II on c64, since manfred make them on it.

naahhh.... i can't.

by extend, the reason behind the CPC success in france, and the non ability for the c64 to sell well here is that
the CPC had better graphics in most cases, and pure programming jewels.

which games on c64 can be said as jewels ? give out names
